George's obituary
Obituary: Georgios Christos “George” Vlachos
June 20, 1945 – September 10, 2025
Georgios Christos “George” Vlachos, age 80, passed away on September 10, 2025. Born in Greece on June 20, 1945, George lived a life of scholarship, service, and international achievement.
George’s career reflected his deep commitment to economics, finance, and education. After early roles as an accountant with the Commercial Bank of Greece and service as a Lieutenant-Interpreter in the Greek Army, he went on to serve as an Account Officer at First National City Bank (now Citibank) in Piraeus. From 1976 to 1985, he worked as an Economist at the Bank of Greece, shaping insights into global markets and national financial policy.
In 1986, George moved to the United States, where he became an International Economist at the Manufacturers National Bank of Detroit. His expertise and dedication to economic thought led him to a distinguished academic career. He served as Professor of Economics at Central Michigan University, later as Senior Lecturer in Banking and Finance at Wayne State University, and most recently as Lecturer in Finance and Business Economics at the University of Michigan–Dearborn, where he inspired students for two decades.
George was admired not only for his professional contributions but also for his generosity, humility, and mentorship. He carried with him a love for his Hellenic roots and shared that passion with colleagues, students, friends, and family. His influence extended across continents from Athens to Detroit, where he left a lasting mark on institutions, communities, and lives.
George is survived by his beloved wife, Tatiana; his sons Alexander, Andrew, and Peter; his step-daughter Natasha Federal; and his step-son Paul Federal. He will be remembered as a devoted husband and father, a wise teacher, and a kind soul whose memory will live on in all who knew him.
