George's obituary
George L. Gressett, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and faithful servant of Christ, was born on September 11, 1934, and entered his eternal home on December 22, 2025. His life was a testimony of unwavering faith, perseverance, generosity, and devotion to God, family, and service.
George gave his heart to Jesus Christ at the age of 11, beginning a lifelong commitment to his Lord and Savior that guided every decision he made. His faith was the foundation of his character and the center of his life.
In August 1955, George married the love of his life, Blanche Gery. At the very beginning of their marriage, they knelt beside their bed and prayed for their future together, committing their lives to God and to each other. They shared 70 years and 4 months of marriage, which George often credited to their mutual commitment to God and to one another. One of George’s greatest priorities was providing for his family so Blanche could be a stay-at-home mother. He was a devoted husband, a good provider, and known for his generosity and kindness.
George’s early life was marked by hardship. He was raised by his adopted grandmother in poverty and at one time lived in a converted chicken coop. George and his grandmother lived off the earnings from his paper route, an experience that shaped his strong work ethic, humility, gratitude, and compassion for others.
Despite these challenges, George excelled academically. He graduated as Salutatorian from Suitland, MD High School in 1952, the same year he battled polio. In September 1952, he enrolled at Eastern Nazarene College (ENC). He often joked that he “squeezed four years into five” as he worked his way through college. He graduated in 1957 with a major in Mathematics and a minor in Chemistry.
In the fall of 1957, George began his career with IBM, where he served as a devoted and faithful employee for 36 years. He retired from IBM in December 1993.
George was deeply committed to Eastern Nazarene College throughout his life. He served as a trustee for 39 years, including roles as Treasurer, and served on numerous boards. In recognition of his extraordinary service and dedication, George received an Honorary Doctorate from ENC in May 2010.
George had a special affection for babies and delighted in time spent with his family. He loved the church, Christian education, college ministry, and Camp Taconic, all of which held a special place in his heart.
He also had a tender heart for animals, especially dogs, and held a special place in his heart for his beloved dachshund, Fritz.
Most of all, George will be remembered as a man wholly committed to Jesus Christ—his Lord and Savior. His life reflected humility, perseverance, faithfulness, and love.
George is survived by his beloved wife, Blanche; his four children, Richard and his wife Valerie, Margaret, Susan and her husband Melvin, and Donald and his wife Amelia; fourteen grandchildren; and seventeen great-grandchildren.
