Gene's obituary
Gene Michael Massung was born January 22, 1962, in Miami, Florida to Diane and Gene Massung.
Gene grew up in Miami Lakes, Florida playing baseball, football, and going to the beach. He attended Chaminade High School and graduated in 1980. Gene went on to attend Embry Riddle and eventually earned his Aircraft and Powerplant license from Atlanta City College.
For over 20 years Gene worked in Atlanta, becoming the Maintenance Manager at Air Tran, then transitioning to Southwest Airlines. Gene loved working for Southwest, enjoying the friendships and culture he found there. In 2015 Gene moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida to become maintenance manager for Southwest at Fort Lauderdale airport.
In 1994 Gene married his wife Patricia Coleson and together they raised three boys, Andy, Cameron, and Trevor. He was extremely proud and took great pride in all of his boy’s accomplishments. On any given weekend you could find Gene at his kid’s ballgames, working in his yard, or climbing a ladder he shouldn’t. Gene absolutely adored his family.
He had a warm, funny, and oftentimes sarcastic sense of humor that always made everyone smile. Anyone who knew Gene will always have in their mind that special grin he seemed to always have on his face. He was a very generous and compassionate man who never hesitated to help anyone in need, whether that meant jumping in a pool to save a life or stopping on I75 in Atlanta traffic to fix someone’s tire.
Gene will be deeply missed by those that loved and knew him. He is survived by his wife Pat, sons Andy, Cameron, and Trevor, granddaughter Maisy, parents Gene Massung and Diane DiLallo, his two sisters, Cindy and Julie, as well as his nieces, nephews and other family members who love him dearly.
There will be a Celebration of Gene’s Life at the Country Club of the South in Johns Creek, Georgia from 4 pm – 8 pm on Friday, October 5.
