January 15, 2021, I could only post a picture, I could not find the words that I felt would do better at telling everyone  how I wanted to remember Gavin.

I have since shared my story of meeting Gavin with some, most recently at our PCA awards dinner in November at Sebring. I hope my story brings joy to everyone that reads it, I can say this, it brings me joy to share my story and sadnesses that I do not have more.

If my memory serves me correctly, I started helping with cone placement on the racetrack at Sebring in Early 2017. Jeffrey Bauer asked if I would like to help him and Gavin place the cones for an event, the answer was immediately yes. I only had several years under my belt in DE and truly placed Gavin on a pedestal. Imagine how tall he would be then! Little did I know this first event was my training to take over cone duty for future events, Jeffrey duped me, so he thought. I would have paid to drive my truck around the track in the early morning hours with Gavin talking racing line and car placement. For the next year or so at every event I would meet Gavin in the hot pits with a pickup full of orange cones and a cold bottle of water in the cup holder for him at 6:45. There was plenty of conversation at each turn-in, apex, and track out, it just wasn’t with me. The conversation was Gavin talking out loud trying to determine the ideal location of cone placement factoring in many variables. The weather, hot or cold track, tires, car, and driver are just a few. Then it was “Brad move that cone 3” left, ok move it back an inch, ok left again”.  The drive between corners was quiet, no personal talk, no “Brad do you want to get a beer after the track goes cold”.  Getting to hear his conversations and riding around the track with him was priceless, I didn’t miss an event!

My relationship with Gavin changed one morning while on cone duty. I had recently purchased a John Deere tractor for the six acres we own and raise some cattle. The dealership gave me two ball caps when they delivered the tractor to my home. While at the track my Porsche cap lived on my head and my John Deere cap on the dashboard. We did not make it to turn three before Gavin asks “what’s that Brad?”, “a John Deere ball cap”, “why do you have a John Deere ball cap?” I explained why I bought the tractor and our conversation that morning was over the top. Gavin was genuinely interested in me and shared lots about himself  growing up on a farm. I would be exaggerating but I think we just drove around throwing the cones out the window hoping they’d land where we wanted them to, we were too busy talking about tractors, farms and family. The next event there was the second ball cap on the dashboard passenger side. Gavin wore the cap to the driver’s meeting and told the crowd a friend of his gave it to him! I cannot count how many diners I was invited to with Gavin and Amy’s friends and clients after that. The most memorable and humbling was an invite to dinner with Gavin, Amy and Joe Bank, that was special!

I live on the east coast in Stuart, Florida. Amy calls one day and tells me they have a business meeting in Stuart and would like to stop by for a visit. Wow! I never cleaned so much house in my life, windows, bathrooms, vacuuming and polishing.  l was excited! We sat in the living room for a bit, opened a bottle of wine, the best one I had of course and soon after, headed out to my shop. We exited the house through the garage, Gavin gave a glance at the two Porsches parked in there but was on a mission. I open up the bay doors and no interest in the modified Porsche on the lift giving clear view of all the parts I had added. Straight to the John Deere, it starts, it’s in gear, and it starts driving down the street with Gavin behind the wheel. We shared dinner that night at a local farm to table restaurant and had a wonderful time.

There were more mornings placing cones and more invites, but not enough! Amy passed on the Chief Track Instructor role to me and I still place the cones every event. Turn 5 and 17 are my favorites, you could loose 5 pounds running back and forth from cone to cone , “ Brad move it 2” to the left, an inch forward, now back to the first cone”.  Every morning of every event I get to watch the sunrise over Sebring, place the cones exactly where Gavin would want (to the best of my ability), and reflect on all the good memories.

Miss you buddy!

I can only imagine the sorrow that Gavin's passing has had on all that have known him and I want to extend my sincere condolences to his immediate family and all his peers. I only had the pleasure to know Gavin for a short period of time, but our automotive histories  made us an easy fit. His knowledge and love for the Porsche brand couldn't be surpassed by any.   What stood out to me was his willingness to share his information for the greater good for all involved in the sport. Like myself, Gavin strived for perfection and he continued to learn and excel in his field to bring the best out at the track for all his clients to share. His client's happiness and complete satisfaction was continually exhibited  by their facial expressions after each and every lap at the track. Being on both sides of the automotive equation has made me appreciate all that Gavin brought to the table to enable me to maximize my Porsche automotive experiences. Thank you Gavin and I will see you on the other side. Rest well my friend! Hopefully we will meet again.
So sorry to find out Gavin`s passing .was watching a U-tube by Sean ,where he went to a shop where Gavin was running .thoughts were I know him from years in the Sun Coast Porsche club.great memory`s of him.He was very fast around the track.I was in my old 911 air cooled, going about 120 mph around big bend,he passed me like i was sitting still . Told him after the session, you made me fell like i was going at a snails pace.He said don`t feel bad that is a 911 GT3 Cup car.
Had many great times with Gavin at Autoquest, the track and various automotive events. He was always passionate about automobiles, and particularly Porsche as was I. He helped me buy and sell a number of cars, starting in 2002 when I moved to Fort Myers. Many positive memories...
Rose and I are deeply saddened by the passing of Gavin and wish to express our sympathy, thoughts and prayers to Amy and all of Gavin’s family.

Gavin was, as everyone knows, widely renowned as a world class driver and the ultimate car authority. However, I was privileged to have known him for even more. We spent many hours over the years in discussions of politics, history, philosophy, ethics and business. They took place on the phone, in his Autoquest office, in my Sarasota office, and even at the track. I didn’t win many of the “discussions” as Gavin was as competitive in the world of ideas as he was on the track.

Gavin always had difficulty finding ways to compliment me on my driving. But, since I was 25+ years his senior, he would often say to me “You’re my hero. I only hope I can drive as well as you do when I am your age”. I don’t think he really meant it, but it meant a lot to me. Always will.
I had the honor and privilege of competing against Gavin in the Panoz race series. A tough competitor, but always a fair and true gentleman both on and off the track.
During these years I was able to get to know Gavin because he was willing (and patient) to get to know me. Like many others, he mentored me from being a new DE driver with PCA to racing Cup cars at Sebring. I loved Gavin for his wisdom about racing but even more for his view on life. He helped through many challenging moments on and off the track and I always looked forward to seeing him in person and hearing about all the new things he was working on developing for our Porsches. Gavin was a generous and kind man and a had a knack for convincing me to do all sort of things :) I will miss him, but his memories will always be with me. Love to Amy and Gavin
Having known Gavin for just a short time, since 2017 I was always impressed with his openness and tenacity for live. We had so many things in common. A great man to know and my wife Sue and I were lucky to have known him. Amy thinking of you regards Gavin Hamer
Lorette and I are devastated by the passing of Gavin. Our thoughts and prayers are with Amy and his extended family in the US and New Zealand.
Thoughts and prayers for Amy and all of Gavin's family. In recognition of the significant contributions Gavin made to PCA, to Suncoast PCA region, to the Suncoast PCA DE program, and to our knowledge and enjoyment of our cars, the Suncoast PCA Board of Directors will contribute $2,722 ($1 for each member) to the charitable organization to be set up in Gavin's name. We're all grateful for his time with us, he will be missed.
Little did I know when I walked into Auto Quest around 6 years ago I would have the privilege to meet Gavin. Gavin could not only teach me about Porsche’s but I also found out very quickly he had a passion for Deere tractors and equipment as well. We had an instant connection.
Nancy and I will certainly miss Gavin. Not only for his amazing knowledge but for his humor, wit and positive attitude.

Thanks for many great memories.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family Amy.
Amy & Family. We are very sorry for your loss. On many levels, both personally and professionally, Gavin was an inspiration and a mentor to me and many, many others as well. Gavin's passion for life and "cool cars" will forever be with us. We will miss you, Gavin.
A wonderful and brave man. I will deeply miss him. May his memory be a blessing to you and your family.
I am so sorry for your loss. For me Gavin was an inspiration even though I did not know him well. I did really enjoy his talks at the solo/instructor's meeting at the Suncoast DE events. He was always quick to help answer any questions at the track. He will be greatly missed.
Tracey and I are very sorry for your loss, and we will your family and Gavin in our thoughts and prayers.
Here's praying a heart full of memories. I was hoping to meet him one day. I know my husband adored him for the short time he knew him. We are thankful their paths crossed.
Gavin have given us so many memories since 1990.
He showed us how precious time is and how to take full advantage of life.
We have traveled all over the world with him and created a lot of memories. These will forever be in our hearts and we will never forget his kindness.

Amy we offer all of our thoughts, prayers and well-wishes during this time. It is a big grief and we feel a great sadness.
Our most sincere condolences

For me, the many memories are fixed through our track days, AutoQuest (Fort Myers, FL) visits, countless uber-long phone conversations (we configured our 991.2 RS’s together one night by phone) and shared meals. Over many years, Gavin was always eager to chat about apex’s, corner entries and exits and my driving and instructing made huge progress through his shared advice. The dinners and lunches we shared are warmly remembered as a time of laughter and friendship.

Several springs ago at Sebring, Gavin invited me for an unforgettable ride in a one-off GT4 “RS”. With 450hp, total suspension changes, pressures starting at 19 (!) and many more mods, he reeled-in RS’s and all others in an unforgettable session during which I thought we would lose it, crash it and roll-it – such was his ability to push to-and-beyond the most reasonable limit. For those of you who know Turn 1 at Sebring, we were so close to the wall on EVERY lap that I believed I could touch the wall from the right seat! Every lap flat-to-the-floor through Bishop’s Bend was extraordinary and outstanding – what a rush.

Gavin’s life reminds me of one of my favourite quotes. This from Hunter S. Thompson:

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, “Wow! What a ride!”

Gavin, you are missed
