Gary's obituary

Gary Richard Westoby was born 1.19.56 and passed away peacefully in his home into the arms of his Lord and Savior on 10.29.25 with his wife, sister-in-law Lani Dombrowski and his nephew Mark Dombrowski by his side. He was preceded in death by his mother Bobbie Jayne Brooks Westoby and his father John Earl Smith Westoby. He is survived by his wife Deborah (Deb) Marie Roberts Westoby and his only son Kevin Joseph Westoby, only brother David N. Westoby, nieces Shaeli Westoby, Kathleen Paige Westoby and nephew Derrick Westoby as well as stepmother Doris LaVallee Westoby. He is also survived by multiple cousins on his dad’s side.

Gary loved the outdoors and was in Boy Scouts as a boy. He was an automotive technician for a good part of his life working for others and then eventually owning his own shop in Alaska specializing in Jeep and AMC. He continued in that after leaving Alaska and moving to Oregon. He became a CubMaster of Cub Scout Pack 81 and then a Scoutmaster of Troop 81 in Bend, OR and was in the Order of the Arrow. In 1995, he went to work for Oregon Youth Authority, where he rose in rank from Group Life Coordinator taking on the role of PbS Coordinator as well to becoming full time as a Policy Analyst 2 as the OYA PbS Coordinator for OYA, most of his time was spent at the Camp Tillamook Workstudy Program. He also taught a small select group of youth about computers forming the Geek Squad which rebuilt computers for the different facilities in OYA. He held many hats within OYA which included involvement in SEIU representing a large number of state employees. During his time in Tillamook, he was very involved in the Tillamook Christian Center doing the books and anything else that was needed.  On March 17, 2007, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at a Third Day concert while attending the High Desert Men's Summit with the TCC men at EagleCrest (much to the delight of his wife), thank you George Hodgdon for this information...I finally know the date of his salvation. This was a major turning point in his life. He was involved with Tillamook Aglow with his wife helping with the technical and computer aspect. While planning for retirement, we purchased and lived full-time in a 5th wheel in Tillamook getting it prepared and making it our own to hit the road to travel full-time in 2021 or 2022. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia with Parkinsonisms at the end of 2021. God is the only one Who knows the number of our days. We prayed through it hoping for healing on earth and many many prayed with us but the Lord took him home and he received his ultimate healing. His wife’s mantra was “to live is Christ, to die is gain.” He knew where he was going and his wife was by his side from the beginning till he stepped into eternity with his Lord. He will be remembered as one who was helpful, did everything with excellence, was intelligent, honest, forthright, kind and had a sense of humor. Towards the end of his life, the Lord imparted humbleness, grace and mercy which was always extended to his wife who cared for him through this disease. He was loved and respected by many and will be remembered always. His song was Waymaker, so when you hear that song, remember him.
