Gary's obituary
Gary Van Dennis was born in 1957 to the late Faye and Gilbert Dennis in Annapolis, Maryland.
He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
Gary graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 1975. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and received a Masters degree from George Washington University.
He worked as an engineer on various initiatives at the Westinghouse Defense Electronics Center, AAI Corporation (now Textron) and the US Patent Office. He also worked as a Program Manager for Booz Allen Hamilton. Some of his work can be found in the Smithsonian Air and Space museum’s collection of which he was very proud.
Outside of work, Gary dedicated his time to his family, friends, and helping his community. In 1994, he was named AAI Volunteer of the Year for establishing a computer lab and instruction program for children in the Edmondson Village community. He was also deeply involved with The Boy Scouts of America where he served as District Commissioner from 2012 - 2014. In 2014, The Boy Scouts of America awarded Gary the Silver Beaver award, to recognize registered Scouters of exceptional character who have provided distinguished service within a council. One of Garys' greatest passions was mentoring and advising young peop!e at work and in the community.
Gary also served his community as past presidents of both the Howard Park Civic Association and Ravens Roost #138. He was also a proud member of the Epworth United Methodist Men. In his leisure time, Gary was a great fan of old school music including his favorites Earth, Wind and Fire, Stevie Wonder, and George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic.
His sunset was on December 3, 2025 in Baltimore, Maryland. Gary is survived by his wife Darlene Dennis, daughter Ryanne Dennis, stepson Dorian Brooks (Keara), and grandchildren Azzure and Ava Brooks. He has also left a host of relatives, and faithful friends who he considered family.
Though he is gone, his kindness and laughter live on in all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, the Dennis family requests that financial contributions be made to the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 846 in Loving Memory of Gary Dennis.
Following the service, cremation will take place.
