Gary's obituary

Gary Edward Thisius, born August 23rd, 1951 to Gerald and Wilma Thisius, died at his home in Shore View Minnesota on May 13th 2023 after a hard-fought battle with cancer and diabetes. Gary is loved and will be missed by many who remember his kindness, his strong work ethic and his great capacity to do for others.

Gary was born in Wells, Minnesota where he attended Wells Easton High School. Gary was an athlete participating in track, football and basketball. He graduated in 1969 and was part of the basketball team that brought Wells to the State tournament.

Gary was a proud member of United States Marine Corp, 1972-1976. Gary served in Vietnam. He came home safe but to heartbreak finding that his youngest sister Julaine had passed away. He kept her picture in his top desk drawer, but spoke of her seldom as was his way.

Gary drove delivery trucks for most of his career, at one point owning and operating G and J Trucking named for he and his wife Judy. Gary was a hard-working man, but he lived for his time on the water or in the woods. Gary enjoyed hunting and fishing each year with his brother, Wayne and cousin, Rick. On one such fishing trip to Mille Lacs, Gary met the love of his life, Judy.

Gary and Judy were married in 1987. He quietly championed the role of step-father to Jody, Betsy and Kris Jon and became the best Papa ever to his 6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Gary will be remembered for his big heart, willingness to lend a hand and of course join you for a cold PBR. His family and friends will continue to tell stories of his kindness for years to come.

Gary is survived by his three children Jody Sparkman, Betsy (Bradley) Byker and Kris Jon Jacobson, his sister Jerelyn (Ken)Eckhardt , brother Wayne (Cheryl)Thisius, his 6 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is proceeded in death by his parents Gerald and Wilma, his sister Julaine, and most recently his dear wife Judy.

In death, Gary has shown again his generous spirit and has chosen to donate his body to the University of Minnesota Medical School. He has requested that no formal memorial service be planned.
