Gary's obituary

Gary Douglas Osborn, a devoted father, grandfather, pioneering pharmacist, and visionary in functional medicine, passed away on September 29, 2025, at the age of 82. He leaves behind a legacy of innovation, compassion, and curiosity that touched the lives of family, colleagues, students, and patients alike.

Born in Montpelier, Ohio, to Willis and Wilma Osborn, Gary grew up on a family farm, where he developed a strong work ethic, resourcefulness, and a deep curiosity about the world. From an early age, he showed a remarkable combination of intelligence and creativity, traits that would define his personal and professional life. He attended Eden High School in Edon, Ohio, and went on to earn his degree in Pharmacy from Ohio State University, laying the foundation for a groundbreaking career in compounding pharmacy and functional medicine.

Gary began his professional journey by opening his own pharmacy in Montpelier, Rings Pharmacy, which continues to serve the community today. His dedication to personalized patient care and innovation quickly earned him respect in the field. Over the years, he founded Apothecure, a compounding pharmacy he ran for more than 23 years, offering tailored medications and therapies that addressed the unique needs of his patients. He also established the Texas Institute of Functional Medicine (TIFM), operating it for over 20 years to educate healthcare professionals in functional medicine and integrative approaches to wellness.

His professional achievements were numerous and significant. Gary was a Certified Clinical Nutritionist (CCN) and a Diplomat of Anti-Aging and Functional Medicine from the Institute of Functional Medicine. He was deeply committed to lifelong learning, regularly attending conferences around the world—including ACAM and IFM events—where he both absorbed and shared knowledge on functional medicine, anti-aging, and pain management. His expertise and dedication inspired countless colleagues and students, many of whom looked up to him as a mentor and guide in the ever-evolving field of integrative healthcare.

As an active member of a scuba diving team, he traveled extensively to dive sites around the world, embracing challenges and experiences that expanded his understanding of life and the natural world. He also enjoyed hiking, art, and reading, immersing himself in pursuits that reflected his love of knowledge, beauty, and discovery.

Gary’s personal warmth, generosity, and humor left a lasting impact on those who knew him. He was a devoted father to his children, encouraging their curiosity and celebrating their achievements. His family often describes him as a best friend and guide, whose wisdom, laughter, and inventive spirit shaped the trajectory of their lives.

Gary was married for over 20 years to Mary Ann Shaver Osborn, with whom he raised two children. Mary Ann passed away in 2020 after a courageous battle with cancer. At the time of his passing, Gary was married.

His influence extended far beyond his immediate family. Colleagues, students, and patients alike admired his knowledge, creativity, and dedication to advancing healthcare. He was deeply committed to improving lives through personalized medicine, functional approaches to chronic conditions, and pain management. Many professionals in the field of compounding pharmacy and functional medicine cite him as a pivotal figure in shaping their careers and approaches to patient care.
