Gary's obituary

Gary Matthies passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, dedication, and deep love for his family.

Gary found great joy in life’s simple pleasures and in the people he loved most. His greatest pride and happiness came from being a father to his daughter, Tabby, whom he loved fiercely. He also cherished his grandchildren—Ari, Ashley, Becca, Lexi, DJ, and Zachary—and was deeply proud of each of them. Gary was also a loving and proud godfather to Emma and Eli. He treasured the time he spent with family.

Gary enjoyed playing golf, singing, entertaining friends and loved ones, and reading—especially about World War II, a subject in which he became a true expert. In his younger years, Gary embraced adventure as both a private pilot and a certified scuba diver.

Professionally, Gary was a pioneer in the field of child abuse prevention and treatment. Throughout his career as a social worker, he directed programs and agencies that provided innovative, state-of-the-art services aimed at preventing children from experiencing abuse or neglect. He also served as an emergency Child Protective Services responder in both Washington and California. Gary dedicated his life’s work to protecting vulnerable children and helping families in need, leaving a lasting impact on countless lives.

Gary will be remembered for his generosity, intelligence, humor, and unwavering commitment to helping others.

A Celebration of Life will be held on April 12, 2026. Those who would like to attend are invited to contact Tabby Matthies at 916-821-0080 for additional information.

In lieu of flowers, Gary asked that anyone who is able consider making a donation in his memory to his grandchildren Ari and Ashley’s college fund. Please contact Tabby Matthies for details on how to donate.
