Gary's obituary
Gary Alan Luttringer loved to be in Nature !
He was born April 11, 1941 in his beloved San Francisco, and died Feb. 17, 2024 in Scotts Valley.
Left behind to keep his memories are his wife of 40 years, Claudia (Jo), children Sheryl, Keith, and Ryan, step children Christy Root, and Mike Monsour, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His parents, Benhardt and Lois Luttringer, and sister Lucille (Lu) predeceased him.
Gary joined the Air Force and was stationed in Plattsburg, NY during the Cuban missile crisis. He returned to CA to become a firefighter. He served in the Fremont FD and CalFire for 27 years combined.
Gary lived in the redwood forest in Boulder Creek for almost 30 years. His heart was home there. He loved to camp and fish. He knew a lot about nature and shared his knowledge with many. He worked at Wind Cave NP in South Dakota for 2 summers. His photos are AMAZING ! Photography, storytelling, camping, volunteering, and fishing complemented his skills as a noted local naturalist. In CalFire, he knew Smokey Bear personally ! He spent 3 years teaching HS students job skills, and 3 years teaching Outdoor Ed.
He was a punster! Good or bad didn’t matter. It made people smile and laugh.
In Santa Cruz, Gary was busy! He served as a docent at Henry Cowell State Park and the Seymour Center. He loved lawn bowling, traveling the world with his wife, telling stories at schools and parks, entertaining friends, and photography. He was an inventor, artist, and skilled chef (yum!).
Family and friends will miss him dearly.
