Gary was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and follower of Christ. He embodied the scripture, “Follow me as I follow Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1), living his life in a way that made others want to do the same. He made Sherrill, feel loved, supported, and protected, and he did the same for his kids and grandkids. He was always available to share in life’s joys and challenges and offer guidance and support whenever it was needed.
Gary was an award-winning, accomplished architect who designed residential, commercial, nonprofit, and church buildings across the United States. For 38 years, he practiced architecture in California and Colorado with his firm The Larson Group until moving to Birmingham when he joined TurnerBatson Architects. Over his career, he participated with others in designing many notable projects, including The Church on the Way (Los Angeles), The Garden of the Gods Visitor Center, Every Home for Christ, Focus on the Family (Colorado Springs), and Highlands College (Birmingham). Gary was also an active church member and served as an elder and trustee of Church of the Highlands. Additionally, he served on the boards of Every Home for Christ, Messenger Intl., and Joni and Friends.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Church of the Highlands, Grants Mill Campus, on Friday, November 22, 2024, at 1:30pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Highlands College, a passion project for Gary in his final years, or Every Home for Christ, whose mission is to share the truth and love of Jesus with everyone, everywhere.
