Sherrill, I just found out yesterday (2/11/25). I am SO VERY sorry. Not for your loss (he's not "lost" -- you know where he is) but for your hurt. I am so glad I called him a few months ago -- we had such a good visit. Gary not only shaped buildings -- he shaped hearts. He sure made an impact on mine. I am a better man because of the privilege of having worked closely with Gary. Though I was employed with Focus on the Family, I had the pleasure of sharing an office with Gary at 25 South Cascade in Colorado Springs in 1991. Working with Gary on Focus, then Every Home for Christ were two of the best career memories of my life. I recall sitting in my first daughter's wedding in 2001 and leaning over to whisper to my wife, "this has to be a Gary Larson designed church." She wasn't amused by my distraction but I found out later that I was right -- it was! It was a church up in the Flying Horse subdivisions on Northgate Road. For 15 years I worked with Gary closely and it was always such good experiences.  What a remarkable man of God he will always be.  I hope my place in heaven has that Gary Larson look!

Woodland Hills and Pasadena, CA

Gary was the primary person responsible - other than the Lord and me of course - for setting the path of my career, and even influencing my family life with the firm merger to Pasadena in 1986.  He brought me up from an ignorant and unqualified 19 year old pencil drafter at $3.50/hour to a licensed architect in 8 years, including working vacations between quarters away at Cal Poly SLO.    I continued with Gary until he and Carl Gaede closed the Pasadena office in 1993.   My growth was in part through the people he selected for employees and partners.  I am currently the second-gen owner of a firm 350 miles away from Pasadena to which I was introduced through Carl's work with the Nazarene church.  If Gary heard this, I think he would avoid taking any credit, and simply recite Proverbs 16:9, "The mind of  man plans his way, but the LORD directs his steps."

As the staff increased, many, but not all, were believers, from several different churches - Foursquare of course, but also Baptist, Presbyterian, Nazarene, etc.  We did projects for many, including (John MacArthur's) Grace Community Church.  We shared a common belief in the Essentials, having most importantly, unity in Christ, starting with Gary.

I cannot recall regretting a minute of working with and for Gary.  He was consistent, faithful to the people under his leadership as well as his clients, vendors, and engineering consultants.  He was a model of integrity in business, excellence in design and professionalism, and a pleasure to be around personally.   The Lord's gain in taking him home is our temporary loss, and I look forward to seeing Gary again.

May God give the family His peace and comfort as they say goodbye to Gary. He leaves behind a legacy and touched many lives during his time here. He will be missed, but we know he has more great things in store as he goes to his heavenly resting place. God is saying well done thou good and faithful son.
