Gary's obituary

Gary Dennis King lost his courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease on August 28, 2019. He was born July 24, 1934 in Pownal, ME to Charles H. King and Marion (Noyes) King, and lived most of his life in the Yarmouth area.
Gary served as a Radio Operator in the US Army Signal Corps in Germany after WWII, acquiring skills he used throughout his life as a broadcaster and Extra Class amateur radio operator (callsign W1HHT). After military service, he returned to Maine, started his career as an announcer and station engineer on Maine radio at WCME and WCSH-FM. He became a television engineer, and, later, television program director at WCSH, WMTW and WCBB (now MPBN). A talented banjo player, Gary also performed with the Ken MacKenzie Band, a local popular country music ensemble.
When Gary was 8 years old, he fell in love with the girl-next-door. Fourteen years later, he married his childhood sweetheart, Lois Rhea Brown, on Dec 31, 1956. Together they had four sons, Curtis, Gary Jr., Michael, and David. Gary is survived by Gary King, Jr. of Portland, ME and David King of Atlanta GA, as well as several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his wife, Lois, and by sons, Curtis and Michael.
After retirement, Gary’s love of music and broadcast radio moved him to create the nonprofit Heritage Radio Society, in 1995, and build WYAR, 88.3FM, which went on the air in November of 1998. He served as Chief Operator and Station Manager and managed the majority of programming until 2013, when poor health began to limit his daily involvement with the station.
Through the love and devotion of many friends and family, he was able to stay in his beloved home until the end of his life. Words cannot express the tremendous gratitude felt by his family for each and every person who baked a meal, walked the dog, or helped with the radio station in his final days. Each person helped to enrich his life and make all of the challenges more bearable.
A Memorial Service will be held on September 14, 2019, at the Old Meeting House at 25 Hillside Street, Yarmouth Maine at 11:30 AM.
