Gary's obituary

Gary L. Bradt, 81, of Big Rapids passed away on Saturday, September 8, 2018, surrounded by his beloved family. He was born July 4, 1937, in Ferndale, Michigan to Bertram and Georgia (Smith) Bradt. He grew up in the Utica/Sterling/Shelby Township area.

Gary is survived by Mary, his wife of 56 years; children, Shari (Kelvin) Jackson and James (Dana) Bradt; grandchildren, Christopher (Ashley) Jackson, Daniel (Breana) Jackson, Timothy Bradt, Elizabeth Bradt and Kellie Jackson; great-granddaughters, Elliott, Lillianna and Wesleigh Jackson; sisters, Susan Jefferson, Cookie Miller and Nancy Wiggins; and many nieces and nephews who were all special to him. Gary was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jim Bradt.

Gary served in the United States Navy as a Metalsmith on the U.S.S. Howard W. Gilmore (AS-16). He was a Machine Designer at The Cross Company of Fraser before earning his bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University and his master’s degree from Ferris State University. He was an Assistant Professor at Ferris State University in the Technical Drafting and Tool Design Program, retiring in 1998. Gary loved golf, music, painting, family history and visiting Slovenia. He especially loved the time he spent with family and friends and always had a story to tell.

A celebration of Gary’s life will be held on September 30, 2018. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Artworks in Big Rapids (Youth Scholarships and Programming) or to the family to assist with youth golf scholarships within the community.
