David's obituary

Gary David Beebe, more fondly known to us all as Dave, was born on September 12, 1950 and left us on January 29, 2026. He is survived by his loving wife, Lydia; his children Heather and Joshua; his son-in-law Chris; and his grandchildren, Isabelle, Eli, Emersyn and Abel.

Dave was a man of distinctive character, known for his dry sense of humor, his thoughtfulness, and his immense (but quiet) love. His strong work ethic, his belief that nothing in life is beyond reach and his unparalleled love for his family were the core of who he was. He was happiest when teaching, when reading a book by the fire or when simply watching the people he loved be happy.

Dave believed in the power of education and was a living example that one is never too old to learn. At 49, he went back to school to pursue his dream of becoming a teacher, and found his professional passion teaching at Gervais Middle School. One of his proudest moments was when he was asked by Gervais High School graduating seniors to be their commencement speaker. He adored being a teacher.

Dave often dismissed the notion that he had impacted many lives, but the number of birthday cards that flooded his mailbox for his 75th birthday hopefully helped convince him of the role he played for so many people. The deluge of memories people shared of him these past weeks is testimony to how deeply he touched the hearts of those around him and has brought comfort to Lydia, Heather and Joshua.

In his life, Dave worked on oil rigs in Montana, worked in hot metal typesetting, studied to be a pastor, earned his 5th degree black belt, earned four college degrees, managed restaurants, and taught middle and high school. He loved westerns and mysteries, was a forgetful gardener, tried his hand at rock tumbling, collected over 100 walking sticks, mentored many (including ensuring that many of Josh's friends got to school each day), and read we don't know how many books. He showed his love by feeding people - if he ever offered you food, even a lifesaver, it was because he loved you.

The effect Dave had on his loved ones and the world around him is undying. He may not have seen it, but he left an indelible mark on every life he touched. His legacy will continue in the hearts of those who knew him and loved him.

A open house to celebrate Dave will be held on May 16 from 1-4 pm at Lydia's home. Everyone whose life was touched by Dave is invited to come and help us celebrate him.

We have established a scholarship at Chemeketa Foundation to support Chemeketa Community College students from Gervais or who attended a Gervais school. Tribute gifts can be made at: https://chemeketa.thankyou4caring.org/give. If you mark the gift as a tribute to Dave it will be directed accordingly.
