Garrett's obituary

Garrett J. “John” Hinnefeld Jr., age 57, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday March 2nd, 2023, in Shawano, Wisconsin. John was born on August 18th, 1965, to the late Garrett J. Hinnefeld, Sr. and Margaret (Marriott) Hinnefeld-Staags in Providence, Rhode Island. John and his siblings had many adventures traveling throughout their childhood while their dad served in the Navy. After graduating from Freeland High School in Michigan, John enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He faithfully served performing intermediate level repairs on aircraft. In May of 1993, he was united in marriage to fellow marine, Teresa (Duenkel), in Hampton, Virginia. As their family grew, they moved to Shawano, WI, where John later started his first business. He built many relationships in the banking community while providing service and security for nearly 30 years.

John was an avid reader, loved history, and enjoyed shooting with friends and family. He loved the outdoors and always looked forward to his annual camping trips in Michigan. You could often find John in the garage working on various projects. He was very proud of his overlanding trailer that he spent countless hours building. John served many years in ministry at River Valley Church. He was a royal rangers commander, taught Sunday school, led bible studies, was in multiple Christmas and Easter dramas, and loved to sing on the worship team. John was extremely social and almost always ran into someone he knew, he had a habit of talking people's ears off. John bonded with his children over coffee, Star Wars, cooking, car repairs, and their fur babies. John found so much joy in spending time with his children and watching them grow. He projected himself as a tough guy, but when it came to his kids, he was a big softy. He was a wonderful father who loved his children with all his heart, and he will be deeply missed.

John is survived by: his children, Mariah (Coleman) Dole, Hannah (Fiance Katrina Wilz) Hinnefeld, Finn Hinnefeld, Julia Hinnefeld and Joshua Hinnefeld; a granddaughter, Nora; his mother, Margaret “Peggy” (Clint) Hinnefeld-Staags; siblings, Stephen (Cynthia) Hinnefeld, Michael (Tanya) Hinnefeld, Geoffrey (Kim) Hinnefeld, Susan (Bryan) Brooks and Thomas (Jessie) Hinnefeld. He is further survived by his former wife, Teresa (Thomas) Fullerton as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many, many friends.

A funeral service honoring and remembering John will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 11th, 2023, at River Valley Church in Shawano with Pastor Marc Kelliher officiating. Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday from 11:00 am until the time of service. Military Rites will be conducted outside of the church following the funeral.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Maria for opening her heart and filling dad’s last months with love and adventure.
