Fulton's obituary
Fulton was born to Earline Thomas Toaston and Thomas Toaston on Jan 1, 1945 and grew up in Baton Rouge, LA, and was the oldest of three children. Smokey was the Valedictorian of the first graduating class of the new McKinley Senior High School in 1962. He then matriculated at Southern University and pledged Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Sigma Chapter. He continued to serve in the fraternity for 57 years and became a life member. After graduating from Southern University, he served his country as a medic in the Vietnam War as a member of the United States Army. Upon returning, he met his wife of 47 years, Mary Louise Sutherland, and they began their life together.
Smokey was a devoted member of the Catholic Church where he served as a CCD teacher, Eucharistic Minister, and member of the Men's Chorus. Most recently, he served at St. Francis Xavier, and prior to that as a member of St. Aloysius and St. Charles Borromeo Catholic churches. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a dedicated ExxonMobil employee for over 35 years and was currently a substitute teacher for East Baton Rouge Parish School System. He was a loving husband, a devoted father of four, and a grandfather to four grandsons. He continued to enjoy life after retirement and, up until the day he died, he served the East Baton Rouge School System as a much-loved substitute teacher.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Renette Williams. He is survived by his wife, Mary Sutherland Toaston, their four children: Randal Toaston (Dr. Angela Harris), Katahri Toaston, Dr. Tanisha Toaston, and Ryan Toaston (Kelly), and his brother, Claudius Roy Toaston (Joyce). His memory will also be cherished by his four grandchildren: Jalen, Jordan, Kellan, and Trent, and by a host of nieces,
nephews, cousins, and friends.
Military funeral honors and burial will be held on Monday, May 24, 2021 at 11:00 AM at the Louisiana National Cemetery, 303 West Mount Pleasant Zachary Road, Zachary, LA 70791.
