Daniel and Tim, I am so sorry for the loss of your dad. I love you both and your family very much. ❤️
Best wishes to you, Daniel and Tim! I'm glad to have known your father through you two and to know your lovely family! I can see a lot of Fred in Gunnar! Fred had a way of seeing the world and calling it. No wonder he loved coaching! Love to you all!

When I heard the news of Fred’s passing, I immediately said “thank you” for having crossed paths with someone as genuine and kind as he.

In the halls of GM or on the football field, Fred always had a kind word of encouragement or an insight he wished to share. We spoke so often in his little office off the commons.

May he rest in peace.

Dearest Daniel and Tim, I am so sad for you boys, losing both parents in this past couple of years! I loved your mom and dad and I love you both. Your dad helped me with a bad situation back in the 80’s, and I was so grateful to him. I will be at his service, and I’m praying for your whole family. With sincere sympathy and love, Paula Mattison

Coach J was a great inspiration to our 3 sons that he coached at Green Mountain High School and later coached with Eric and Kevin when they came back be coaches for the football team.  He was not only a great Coach, but a great mentor and friend.  Coach J was an inspiration to everyone he met--he was a great influence and example to all he coached in both football and track.  I had the pleasure of having a great phone conversation with him last September and will cherish that conversation.  He will be greatly missed!  Thank you, Coach J, for being a great Coach and Friend to the Rice Family.

Our deepest sympathy to the family, especially Tim & Val.
Coach J was the nicest guy anyone could ever be around. He always had a good attitude about life and football. I considered him a great friend and someone you could always talk to.  Love you Coach.

You had many passions in life that you always would share stories  with me.  Your main passions would be your love for the following:

     1.  your two sons - Timothy and Daniel

     2.  Your grandson - Gunnar

     3.  Green Mountain H.S. football

Your love and pride for all the above was so very evident and cannot be denied.  You will always be looked upon as a great father, grandfather, and football coach.  They all will miss you and I will miss you.  May you rest In Peace.

To some degree I regret getting older...more aches and pains. However, I remind myself that it's a privilege denied to many, as many of our friends and coworkers have passed.

With the passing of Fred, I am reminded of a man with a heart of gold and a man that was always there for family and friends.

Fred and I worked together at Lakewood PD in patrol and investigations. Fred embodied the qualities we admire with his dedication and integrity as a person.

Fred would always do the right thing and could be trusted to have your back.

Fred and I coached against one another for years in football and it was a great rivalry. I also had Fred as a teammate playing football on the Lakewood Police football team. Once again, he was a dedicated teammate, and I enjoyed competing with him.

I miss our conversations about our sons, football and life.

We will never forget Fred, both me and Jackie. Fred and I worked together at LDPS for 10 years. Also playing football together for a few as well. We had great times! Jesus will put Fred on the front line and I know without a doubt he will get the job done. We loved you so, Fred. You were the salt of the earth. You were a true family man that loved Jesus.  You loved everyone! Right now, you, Fred, are celebrating a victory with Jesus. God bless you and all of your family. George and Jackie Johnson
One of my first memories of HS football is when Coach J yelled out "give me a guy that wants to play O-line" at a practice. So after barely playing for the first 3 weeks of the season,  I hopped in and Coach J let me keep playing there the rest of my freshman year. I still tell that story to my football team that I coach here at Douglas County HS. Coach J was so positive and encouraging to all his players. When I had the chance to coach alongside Coach J while we worked under Coach Mac at Green Mountain, he was one of the funnest coaches to interact with. I have so many fond memories of going and scouting opposing teams with Coach J and sitting in the stands and just talking about football and life. He was a great and special man. I absolutely loved Coach J. He was the best!
What a good and kind man, and a heckuva lot of fun to work with. An outstanding public servant, and a friend to all.
Fred was a wonderful person that I had the pleasure to work with at LPD. He was definitely one of the good guys. Rest in peace Fred.

Dear Tim & Dan, you probably won’t remember me, but I worked at the old LDPS from 1978 to 1981 and have such wonderful memories of your father. He was a terrific street cop as well as an excellent detective. During the  time, I was there, we were partners on patrol occasionally.

I remember your father bringing both of you to a power lift meet that I participated in at a gym in Englewood .  Fred was a terrific & kind person, as well as a devoted family man.

May he rest in peace, he was truly one of the good guys!

What a good, good man...not only as a street officer, burglary detective, & coach, but as a warm human being & friend.  Few come along like Fred.  RIP, buddy.
Rest in Peace Fred.  Thanks for your supervision while at Lakewood Department of Safety.
So very sad to hear of Fred’s passing.  He was such a great guy.  My son remembers him from Green Mtn HS, too.  Great coach!  Rest in peace.

Fred and I started about the same time in the very early days of the City of Lakewood  and their brand new police department.  He being from Minnesota and I  from Iowa, each of us Midwestern and redheads too; I always had a feeling of being kindred spirits. I liked Fred a lot.

Fred was a good cop, a hard worker, strong as a bull, had empathy for others, and told a good story. He wasn't noisy, just went about his job quietly and thoroughly. Fred loved his family and lived a good life. He'll live on in many memories.

So long, Fred....

Coach J.  You were a great man that was caring and helpful to all.   You have given so much and touched so many.   It's been years but I will always remember your kindness and how much you helped me.
Fred was one of the most genuine people I have ever known.  It was a true pleasure to have worked with him in the Lakewood PD Burglary Unit.  Rest in peace Freddie!
Coach was a wonderful person and a  friend who touched so many lives with his kindness and warmth.

Fred

It was a pleasure to have you as a friend and neighbor! You will be greatly missed.

Steve Helm

My dear friend Fred,

I was delighted to be your neighbor and friend.  I love cooking for you and you loved it when I cooked for you.  You were like family to us. Zac and I had very strong feelings for you and your well being.  It was very hard when you moved though it was for the best.  Now you're up in heaven with Zac and Zeus.  I take comfort in believing that.  You were a great man Fred. You will be greatly missed.  Love, Roxann,  Steve, Betty, Sean, their children and the rest of our family.  We love you, Roxann Helm
