Fred's obituary

Fred Charles Wehking, Jr.

September 20, 1931 – February 14, 2026

Fred Charles Wehking, Jr., 94, of Valley Park, Missouri, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2026.

Fred lived a full and deeply connected life defined by hard work, strong convictions, and an unwavering love for people. He was the kind of man who truly never met a stranger. Whether in a gymnasium, a classroom, a workplace, or a chance encounter, Fred had a natural gift for conversation and connection. He loved people, and people loved him right back.

Fred proudly served his country in the United States Army at a young age, an experience that helped shape the discipline and determination that became hallmarks of his character. Following his service, he pursued higher education, attending Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri, and later earning his master’s degree from the University of Missouri–Columbia.

Throughout much of his life, Fred dedicated himself to education, teaching and coaching basketball at various schools and colleges. He poured his energy into his students and athletes, believing deeply in effort, accountability, and doing things the right way. Those who knew Fred well understood that it was often “Freddy’s way or the highway” — a phrase that captured both his strong will and the passion behind it. Beneath that tough exterior, however, was a man fiercely devoted to his family and deeply proud of those he guided and mentored.

Fred was, above all else, a family man. He truly cherished time spent with those he loved, finding his greatest joy in family gatherings, conversations, laughter, and shared memories.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley (Graves) Wehking; his sons, Gregory Wehking (Judy) and Jeffrey Wehking; his daughters, Robin Berhorst (Butch) and Dana Volmer (Brian); and many grandchildren, extended family members, and friends who will forever carry his stories and spirit.

Fred was preceded in death by his son, Tim Wehking (Monica).

Fred’s family invites those who knew and loved him to celebrate his life on March 7th, with visitation at 9:30 a.m., followed by a 10:00 a.m. Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 17 Ann Ave, Valley Park, MO 63088. A Celebration of Life will follow at 12:00 p.m. at The Lodge at Grant’s Trail, 4398 Hoffmeister Ave, St. Louis, MO 63125.

Fred will be remembered for his strength, his work ethic, his unmistakable personality, and the countless lives he touched along the way.
