Fred's obituary
Fred Shelton, Jr. - dedicated husband and loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather - passed away on January 13, 2023, at the age of 82 in Temple, Texas.
Fred was born January 30, 1940, to Fred “Rusty” Shelton and Theo Inez Shelton (née Baxter) in San Antonio, Texas.
Fred is survived and greatly missed by his wife of 63 years, Cecilia (née Holbrook), and their children, Rod, Derek, and Fred and his wife Ruth, as well as his sister Barbara and brothers Jack and Jimmy. He will be forever cherished and remembered by his grandchildren, Misty, Sylvia, Nick, Amber, Kayla, and Catherine and his great granddaughter, Leda. He also leaves behind several friends, including his best friend, John Jernigan. He will also certainly be missed by his dog, Little Mary, his cat, Sammy, and his numerous cows and chickens.
Fred is preceded in death by his mother and father.
Fred was a man of few words, but he was tough as an ox, and as stubborn as one, too. Despite his grizzled exterior, he was a softie at heart who would drop everything to help family and friends. Sometimes it was grand gestures like opening his home to whoever needed a place to stay, and sometimes it was more understated, like making sure his granddaughter had a tool kit to take with her to college.
All who knew Fred marveled at his work ethic. Despite being retired from construction and siding installation for over a decade, he was never one to stay idle for long and found himself working at the animal safari close to his house. The animals will no doubt miss his care and roughhousing. When he wasn’t working, he could be found tinkering in his garage, napping in his chair, or fishing. He leaves behind a great legacy of love.
As he passed after a short battle with lung cancer, we ask that you heed his words of advice and “never start smoking.”
