I had recently moved back to San Antonio from New York City.  As a blue-water sailor I looked for local sailing activity and came to Canyon Lake where I met Fred & Jan Riley at LCYC.  There was an upcoming regatta and the Rileys generously allowed me to borrow their Laser.  It was windy & fun....there were no trophies for me, but lots of swimming!!  Later, I became Fleet Capt. for Fred in 1982 and later Wurstfest Regatta chairman and it was an honor to work to make Fred's tenure as LCYC Commodore a successful time for the YC.  Fred & Jan were both deeply involved in building the success & friendliness of LCYC and so generously shared their lake house with many of us who were involved in supporting events hosted by LCYC....thank you!!  The annual Alan & Wirth Riley Award is symbolic of the family's involvement with the junior sailing program at LCYC as a builder of sportsmanship and character in the young members.

Millie and Bill McVey
1992, Lake Canyon Yacht Club, Yacht Club, Canyon Lake, TX, USA
When Millie and I moved to this area from NC, we brought our Flying Scot sailboat with us because there had been an active fleet at LCYC. When we first met Fred and Jan, they practically “adopted” us! They were the nicest, most welcoming couple you could imagine, befriending us immediately!

They no longer had their Scot but gave us their collection of 25+ years of the class’s quarterly magazines, and an oral history of the club’s and the District’s Flying Scot colorful activities!!

It was only a matter of months before Fred and Jan were offering us the use of their wonderful home on the LCYC property when we were going to be there for a weekend or week-long function.

They were genuine lady and gentleman, soft-spoken, and kind. We were blessed to have them as friends. They spoke often of their daughter Karen, who we never had the pleasure to meet, and would so much liked to have met her at this service for her dad, but sadly will be impossible for us to attend.

Such a Dear and Kind person,  that will be missed at Reconciliation!!! I have many memories of Fred and Jan from my earlier days at Reconciliation, especially a Reconciliation Retreat to Laity lodge, in the Texas Hill Country!!! Being a swimmer, much time was spent in the water sharing stories!

I send special Love, Joy, and Peace to Karen, as we Celebrate  Fred❣️❣️❣️  … And what a blessing that he met his latest Granddaughter. 💞💝💞
