Fred's obituary

Fred Ortiz, 86, of La Habra, CA passed away on November 27, 2022 from heart failure. His daughter, Renee and long time caretakers, were with him at his peaceful passing.

Fred was predeceased by his Mother, Pita Gonzales (and foster siblings) and his infant daughter, Jeanne Marie Ortiz. He is survived by his Twin Sister, Francis Ortiz, Daughter Renee Iovino, Son Alfred Ortiz , 5 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. After Fred attended Santa Fe High School in New Mexico, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country from 1954-1957. With an honorable discharge in San Diego, Ca , Fred then relocated and made his home in Los Angeles, Ca area.  Fred was a Sign Electrician and loved his job. He was fascinated by the workings of a neon sign and boasted much about his fearlessness to scale over the tallest buildings with only a safety cable attached. He proudly drove his truck with the huge extension ladder to each job assignment. He prided himself on the relationships that he built with his customers through his service skills and the many people he met on his travels on the LA and Orange County freeway systems. Anyone he met, from a motorist stranded on the side of the road to a homeless person, was an opportunity for him to lend a hand or offer a meal. Even stray pups somehow found their way into his truck and homeward!  He loved his children and supported their endeavors, welcomed their friends as family, and gently offered his best advice from life lessons learned. He loved unconditionally! He was affectionately known as “Gramps” by his grandchildren and was the quirky and fun grandparent who was always up for an adventure or ice cream. He loved old Ford trucks and classic cars. He collected anything from car parts to slot machines and was always up for a Saturday yard sale. He played the guitar and loved to sing Elvis, Frank Sinatra and Mariachi songs. As Fred’s health declined he still enjoyed his music and dancing at the Senior Center and dinners out at La Barca and Senor Campos with his trusted Caretakers.  He spent his last 12 years in La Habra, Ca with wonderful  care from Haven for Mom and Dad until the time of his passing. In 2014, Fred came to trust in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and a peace and a calm could be seen in his countenance. He longed to see his Mom, Pita again and spoke often of missing her tender love and care. He entered his eternal rest peacefully and quietly, hearing in his ear what a wonderful dad he is and how much he is loved.  He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
