Fred was a highly valued member of our creative team. I remember we bought our first houses at the same time…and in California in the 80’s that was an exciting time. I also remember the joy he experienced when his first child was born. When he moved back east we lost track of each other, but I will always remember what a fine man he was.

Fred was a senior designer in the Communications and Design Center, Raychem Corp. I was manager of design during this period and valued Fred greatly as a member of our creative department and as a friend. My heart goes out to his family. He will be remembered as a fine and talented man.

Oh this breaks my heart. Fred put his faith in me and hired me one year out of design school. He was my one and only true mentor through my 45 years as a graphic designer. I only got to work with him for about a year before he went to SF and started his pretty amazing trajectory in corporate design and then teaching. I learned so much from him in that short time—he was patient, earnest, and always encouraging. He let me explore and try things that didn’t always work, but always let me find my way through. To all of his former colleagues, students, his many friends and of course, Jolaine and the girls—I send you all my deepest condolences. Peace be with you, Fred. ❤️

Fred basically recruited me out of a college in Arkansas where I was Chair and teaching at the time. After speaking with him on the phone I booked a flight to Denver to see RMCAD and to meet Fred in person. I made up my mind about the move to RMCAD and Denver within just a few minutes, and for the next 3 years Fred became my mentor and my friend. He had a huge impact on my life and career as a designer and design educator. We taught together, collaborated, planned, and enjoyed each other’s company on a daily basis, and I will always be so thankful and grateful for the time I got with him. Later, after moving on from RMCAD I was able to invite Fred here to CWU to participate in a poster exhibition I curated. He traveled up to Ellensburg, WA and we got a few more amazing days together. This was the last time I got to see him, but we did speak on the phone fairly often afterwards.

My condolences again to the family.

Met Fred about in 1968 at V Corps Headquarters.  We had a great group of guys that shared many laughs together.  Freds best friends were Dave Cerchio and Bill Schockaert.  He was just one of the best people I knew.  When I left Germany to get out of the Army in Sep of 70, he told me that he and Bill were getting a jeep to take me to the airport.   I remember he was so happy to see everyone at the first reunion that I set up in Orlando, he had flown in from Boston from a business trip.  When he told me he had married a Jersey girl I told him he was a lot smarter than I thought.  To Jolaine and the girls, I can only express my deepest sorrow at your loss, but I hope that by you knowing that he was well liked by all his Veteran friends will ease some of the pain.

Fred was one of my fave professors at RMCAD. I loved all the classes I had with him - he was so funny, relatable and encouraged me no matter what. I remember making this paper doll of him just for fun and he loved it so much that he asked me if I could make them of his children. I wish I was better at keeping in touch with him, but Fred would not want me to regret anything. Thank you Fred for everything and for being such a big impact in my life!

I first met Fred in October 1969.  Both of us serving in the US ARMY.  After my original unit was deactivated I was transferred to the Staff Engineer Section at the IG Farben Building in Frankfurt.  This was V CORPS HQ.  Fred was in G-3.  We were both draftsmen for our respective sections.  We shared a large room, where  all our drafting equipment was located.  We helped each other as well on large projects.   Fred had the highest of security clearances at that time.   Fred was a hugely talented draftsmen and artist.   After I moved back into the barracks, from late Jan 71 thru May 1971 we had breakfast together everyday, then drive to work.

I just heard about the passing of my dear instructor and friend, Fred, and my heart is broken. He was my favorite professor during my time at RMCAD—gentle, kind, and endlessly thoughtful. He challenged me to push my work further while also being a warm, lighthearted presence. Anytime I saw him in the halls or at events, I’d think, “Yay, it’s Fred!”

Fred saw potential in me before I saw it in myself. He nominated me to attend the High Ground design workshop, where I was in awe of the brilliant minds discussing the future of design—Fred included. His belief in me gave me confidence I struggled to find on my own. He even helped me land my college internship, which led to my first full-time design job. His advice still sticks with me: “If you want this thing, it’s yours! Go take it.”

The last time I spoke with Fred was nearly 10 years ago when I was working at Effective in Denver. A few colleagues and I organized  our Immersion Day workshop, inviting college seniors to experience agency life and gain insights from a panel of designers, engineers, and project managers. Fred brought students from RMCAD, and I was always so excited to see him, give him a big, grateful hug, and catch up.

I wish I had spoken to him more in these past years, but I will forever be grateful for the impact he had on my life and so many others. Sending love and comfort to his family and friends—Fred will always hold a special place in my heart. ❤️
