Fred's obituary
Fred Allen Jurek, 74, went into the loving arms of the Lord after a long battle with cancer on July 8, 2023. He passed peacefully into rest, while surrounded by the ones he loved. Fred was a loving husband, father, grandpa, and friend to many.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Marcella Jurek, and is survived by and will forever be remembered by his wife, Kathy Jurek, son Joshua Jurek, daughter-in-law Kristen Gaylord Jurek and granddaughters, Katelynn and Kinley Jurek. He is also survived by his brothers, Victor(wife Jeannie), Donald (wife Deborah), and James Jurek, and sisters Sharon Vasbinder and Jane Braden (husband Roy), as well as many nieces and nephews. Fred also held a special place in his heart for his stepdaughter, Lori Tanner Tole, and stepson, George Tanner from his previous marriage.
Fred was born July 7, 1949, in San Antonio, Texas, to Fred and Marcella Jurek. He graduated from McCollum High School in 1966. He then went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree at Trinity University and a Master’s degree from The University of Texas-San Antonio. Fred had a long career of over 30 years in education, where he was both a math teacher and counselor in several school districts around the San Antonio area. After retiring, he worked several more years as a tutor at different schools in the area. During his career in education, he impacted many lives of students and coworkers and made many lasting friendships with many who loved and respected him.
Fred loved playing the harmonica, especially traveling around to play music at different churches, with his beloved friend Charlie Talamanetz. He loved sports, whether it was watching the Spurs, football games, or any event that was a good close game had his attention. He loved watching tennis most of all because it brought him back to his days as a player and coach at McCollum High School. He loved making friends and new relationships with anyone and everyone. Anyone who remembers Fred will always remember, he loved finding a deal, whether it was discount gas or selling and buying cars and trucks. Most of all, Fred loved His Savior, he made it his life mission to bring anyone he could into a relationship with Jesus. Fred lived his faith out loud.
Fred was a generous soul, not only to his family but also to his community in many ways. He was a member of the Gideons for many years, active with Men’s Ministries at prisons, along with being active in his church community.
Fred will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He touched the lives of many and we pray his legacy lives on for years to come.
