Frank's obituary
Frank (Ozzie) Osmundsen passed away on Wednesday, June 21 at Tuscany Villa of Naples Senior Living Community in Naples, Florida. He was 95 years old.
Ozzie grew up in Roslyn, New York as the youngest of six children. He enlisted in the Navy after High School to fight in World War II and was in basic training when the war ended. After the war he worked in his father’s awning company. He eventually took over the business and ran it successfully until he sold it on retirement.
He married Ruth Gallagher (nee Sargent) at age 55 in 1983 and enjoyed a very happy marriage until Ruth’s death in 2006. They lived in Glen Cove on Long Island, New York before moving to Naples.
In addition to Ruth, Ozzie’s loves were his dog Whiskey, Whiskey’s namesake, a 26ft. Tollycraft boat he kept at the Glen Cove Marina, and people in general. He was someone who would strike up a conversation with anyone in earshot, and he and Ruth spent more time entertaining from Whiskey’s back deck on the dock than actually sailing on the Sound. Not having family of his own, he easily took to Ruth’s two daughters, Cynthia and Katie, and their children.
Although he did not see action during the war, Ozzie was proud of his time in the Navy and always wore his Navy cap. In November 2018 he participated in an “Honor Flight” visiting war monuments in Washington DC, which he said was a very emotional and moving experience. In addition to his service in the Navy, Ozzie was for many years a volunteer fireman for the Roslyn Highlands Fire Department and then the Glen Cove Fire Department.
Ozzie was one of those special people who made the world a better place just by being himself, bringing laughter and joy to everyone he met. He will be missed by many.
