Francis's obituary
Francis William McCooey, 68, of New Port Richey, FL, passed away on May 14th, 2023 after a long battle with lung cancer. A truly brilliant man with the most kind heart, Frank will be sorely missed by all of those whose lives he touched.
Frank was born on August 27th, 1954 to Dr. James and Marian McCooey in Woonsocket, RI. After graduating from high school, he went on to earn his Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering at Northeastern University. During his time in college, he met his adoring wife Ellen. They would have been married for 46 years this July.
After graduating in 1977, Frank and Ellen took off to Michigan, as Frank started his first engineering job at Ford Motor Company. After some time, Frank then left Ford to pursue his passion for aviation, resulting in a long and highly successful career at General Electric Aviation in Massachusetts. Frank, Ellen, and young son Michael settled in nearby Derry, NH. Not long after, Frank and Ellen had their second son, Eric. During his 30+ years at GE, Frank attained several patents and awards, and retired as the Consulting Engineer, the highest attainable position on the technical track. Upon retiring, Frank and Ellen realized their lifelong goal of becoming “snow birds”, relocating to New Port Richey, FL for the cold New England months, and residing at the family lake home in NH during the summer months.
Frank was truly a gifted engineer and craftsman. Just a few of the notable things he designed and built as “hobbies” include: an experimental airplane, an electrified recumbent “bike car”, an amphibious kayak, bicycles, and numerous remote controlled flying craft just to name a few. Beyond inventions, he was the ultimate handyman: an expert woodworker, carpenter, electrician, plumber, mechanic, welder, machinist: you name it, he excelled at it. Beyond design and fabrication, Frank was an avid reader, aircraft pilot, boater, cyclist, and fisherman. He was a lifelong Patriots fan, and rooted for the Buccaneers as well once he became a Floridian (once Tom Brady followed him to Florida).
Frank is survived by his wife Ellen, son Michael McCooey and his wife India of Rochester, NH, son Eric McCooey and his wife Aisling of Somersworth NH, his four grandchildren; Blaire, Wesley (middle name Francis), Colin, and Alice (middle name Frances), his brother Jim McCooey and wife Renee of Jamestown, RI, nephew Jeffrey McCooey of Jamestown, RI, and niece Stacey McCooey of Kamas, UT.
Frank was predeceased by his parents; James & Marian McCooey, and brother Daniel McCooey.
A celebration of life will take place at a private location with close family and friends.
