Fazil was an unfailingly kind person and a beloved colleague. We were lucky to have had a year and a half of his creativity, ambition, good humor and thoughtfulness that improved our journalism - and made us smile. He made our newsroom better in many ways and we will miss him so much.
Fazil was a fantastic colleague -- so generous with his time and skills, so committed to helping make other people's work better. It was impossible not to like him. He had this wonderfully understated sense of humor, and he was so calm and kind. We will miss him so much at The Hechinger Report. Sending love to his family and all who knew him.

Fazil was such a quiet and humble person that he had no problem letting his peers at Columbia Journalism Investigations shine in his presence. But when he spoke, he spoke with conviction, full of determination. He came to CJI eager to learn and left full of promise. Everybody who worked with Fazil at CJI is deeply saddened that his star was snuffed out so prematurely. RIP Fazil. Already, you had made a difference with your journalism. The world is and will be a better place because of it.
Fazil, I always said you cheated at cards but really you were just better at playing than all of us. Thank you for showing me your favorite snacks at Patel Brothers. The world is darker without your wit, bravery, and kindness. Rest easy, my friend ❤️
Fazil was such a talented journalist and such a kind and gentle soul. Condolences to his friends and family. He will be missed.
I was so sorry to hear about Fazil's passing. He was such a kind and gentle person.
My first friend in nyc. You will always be remembered, Fazil.
Any length of time I spent with Fazil was a privilege. I will remember him as a good man who was able to spread a great wealth of kindness with a soft, intelligent voice. I will remember the songs he sang and the poetry and the smiles I was lucky to have witnessed from him. And I imagine we will see the lasting effects of everyone he touched.
Fazil will be remembered as the driven and talented journalist that he was, but, by those who were lucky enough to cross his path, he will mostly be remembered as a good friend, as a calming  and secure presence, and as a sarcastic accomplice. He had a beautiful singing voice, he gave tall and warm hugs, and he was full of unexpected and hidden talents.  While we try to accept this horrific reality, I want to be grateful for the precious memories we got to share. May the Earth be light on you, Fazil.
