Fazil was an incredible journalist and wonderful human being. I got to work with him for a short time while he was reporting on COVID loss in NYC. He was incredibly thoughtful, intelligent, hardworking, and most of all kind. My heart goes out to his loved ones, I hope these words bring you a small bit of comfort in such a difficult time. Rest in peace Fazil.

I think of Fazil everyday and the sadness of his senseless death is undiminished. I will remember him a a soft spoken, gently, keenly intelligent and deeply compassionate human being. His reporting on COVID orphanhood in New York City continues to inspire me and my work. I am so very sad and still in shock. My deepest condolences to his mom and siblings and to his dear friends. I am so very sorry and angry that he lost his life - so young and so much promise. It is a terrible tragedy.

So sorry to read this story and about the loss of such an exceptional human. These battery fires are infuriating - people who charge sketchy batteries in NYC buildings are risking everyone's lives! This needs to be urgently addressed by authorities.

My friend Fazil! I never really got the chance to meet you after our graduation from RPVV. I wish I was that fortunate. My condolences to the family and friends. Mere bhai, RIP. I am still in shock. I wish I had the chance to meet you, but life had other plans.

Such a tragic loss. My heart is broken for his family, friends, colleagues, and all who knew him. I never had the pleasure of meeting him, but he was a very close friend of my cousins, so that automatically makes him special.
It has been beautiful to read the impact he has made on people’s lives, may his spirit live on forever!

Fazil was a lovely guy, highly competent in both dishing out and taking the most brutal banter. He had quiet confidence and amazing style (mainly but not limited to glasses) and was simply a joy to be around. I'm going to miss playing chess with him, joking around with him and simply having him around. I will always admire his journalistic talent, his humility, how loved he was by those who knew him and, of course, how efficient he was with his words.
He really was a great friend. Sending love and support to those who knew him. Miss you, Fazil.

Fazil has a way of making you feel like family right from the first conversation, and that’s how I’ll remember our time together at Columbia. In a sea of tasks, he always managed to pay attention to the fine details— and that reflects in his work as a journalist. Rest easy, brother. You were taken too soon.

Fazil genuinely cared about people, he was always kind and thoughtful. He would listen attentively and never wasted his words — he always used them wisely and intentionally. One time, it had been long since we had last spoke, and I asked him for help with coding - and he was so good at it! - he spent hours helping me and wouldn’t hang up until we got to the end of the assignment. This is the image I will keep of him. Unconditionally willing to give his all to others. I wish I had shared more time with him but I’m so grateful to have gotten the gift to meet him. The world was a kinder place with him in it. He will be missed. Sending my love to his friends and family.

I met Fazil towards the end of our time at Columbia and was struck by his kindness. In person and through his reporting, he taught me how data can tell a complex and compelling story. In a world of chaos and conflict, he radiated calmness and warmth to any circle he was in. His close friends really respected and celebrated him — and this loss will be felt by all of us and the journalism community at large.
