Evelyn Elsie Marie Moore passed away at home on Wednesday, October 9, 2019, from a recurrence of cancer. Just a few days before her passing, she celebrated her 92nd birthday surrounded by immediate family, including several great-grandchildren who enjoyed helping blow out the candles on her birthday cake.
Evelyn was born on a farm north of Cadams, Nebraska, on October 4, 1927, the oldest daughter of Eilert and Hattie Bargen, and raised on a farm near Nora Nebraska. Her close-knit family was hardworking and highly respected in the community. She was confirmed in the Lutheran Church. She graduated from Nelson High School and went on to teach for several years in a one-room schoolhouse in Weber Kansas. Evelyn moved to Washington, DC at the age of 18 and worked as a “Government Girl” to support the war efforts. It was in the DC area where she met her future husband, Warren Harold Moore (Hal), while working at Fort Myer, a US Army base next to Arlington Cemetery in Arlington County, Virginia. She returned to Nebraska to attend the University of Nebraska where she studied math and education. Hal and Evelyn were married in Lockhart, Texas in 1951, and started their Army life together, which included posts in San Francisco, Naples and Paris before eventually settling in Alexandria Virginia where they raised three daughters, Patricia, Pamela and Paula. Evelyn moved to Forney, Texas later in life to be closer to her family.
Evelyn was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a close friend to many people throughout her life. She was friendly, outgoing and knew no strangers. She will be forever remembered by her three loving daughters Patricia (husband Todd Brown), Pamela (husband Mike Adams), Paula (husband Sam Cochran); eight grandchildren: Anna, Rio (wife Theresa), Joe (wife Carla), Florence, Andy, Michelle (husband Roy), Seth (wife Catie) and Ian (wife Nina); six great-grandchildren: Kamron, Kaylyn, Deanna, Julia, Nicolas and Evelyn; her brother Lyndall Bargen and his wife Bonnie of Nora, Nebraska; sister-in-law Norma Belle Bargen of Nora, Nebraska; and countless nieces, nephews, extended family and close friends. She is preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Hal; her parents; her other siblings; and their spouses.
Throughout her life, Evelyn was driven by a desire to show God’s love expressed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ. As part of her enduring faith, she recognized that she has eternal life, joy and peace with God. She was fond of ending conversations with the words “love, love, love” and expressed unconditional love on a daily basis to those who knew her. She will be greatly missed by so many people.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 19 at 11:00am, Rosary Prayer begins at 10:45am, at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church (9470 CR 213 Forney, Texas) where Evelyn was actively involved. Evelyn will be interred in Arlington National Cemetery alongside her husband.
