Bacon. I've got two stories about Evan for you today. Both have to do with Evan's love for bacon.

In 2017, for Evan's birthday, I took him out for breakfast at McDonald's, his restaurant of choice.

I told him, "Order anything you want, Evan."

He said, "Anything??"

Thinking that he might order something breakfast-y like a sandwich or even hotcakes, I answered, "Yes, anything."

With that answer, he walked up to the counter, and confidently ordered, "Could I please have 20 pieces of bacon?"

And that's all he wanted for breakfast that day at McDonald's.

It was a good bacon moment to remember.

But wait, there's more.

One Saturday afternoon,  Evan, Ashley, Julia, Andrew, my parents and I went to an Irish Pub in Olympic village for lunch. When it came time to order, Evan asked the server, "I‘ll have the Fish & Chips, but instead of the chips I’ll have bacon.”

The server, amused at this kid's unabashedly high maintenance request, repeated, "So let me get this straight. You want Fish & Chips. No chips. Just bacon instead. Fish and Bacon?"

Evan: "Yes."

Server: "OK! Let me see what we can do."

When time came for all our meals to be served, guess what came on Evan's custom Fish & Chips order? A plate of Fish & Bacon. No extra charges of course.

I was Evan's advisor for his 9th and 10th grade years at Washington Leadership Academy. I jumped at the chance to be his advisor, as I have never advised an Asian kid since the founding of the school. It may seem shallow, but it was a real connecting point for us. We talked about what it felt like to be one of the only Asian kid in school, expectations, and even relationship talks. He was never forthcoming about his feelings, but he was always genuine about his interest in mine or his classmate's. Our advisory was almost like a boy's club where we talked, understood each other, and, of course, played videogames. His favorite character was Kirby and he got quite good under the moniker of "Potato."  As we turned to virtual learning, he still attended each of our advisory classes, even though I knew he wasn't going to all of his classes. He and I remained close through those trying years of virtual learning to the point that he asked me to write his letter of recommendation. It was one of the easiest ones to write as his accomplishments and character were some of his brightest attributes. The world wasn't ready for him!

Evan, you will be missed, and you will never be forgotten.

What a terrible loss. I am so privileged to have known and taught him. Though there was little I could teach this brilliant boy. Love and condolences.
Goodbye Evan...

I'm so sorry for your loss, Pastor Andrew! My deepest condolences. Thoughts and prayers for you and your family. Ruby
Hi Evan, I hope you are filled with the overwhelming and overflowing love from all of us. Can’t wait to see your smile again!
I was so thankful to be with you today. The honesty and openness about Evan's struggle as well as the far reaching beauty of his life was healing for me. I have always held the song, "I Will Be Yours, You Will Be Mine," as a prayer for my own mental health anguish. I was so filled by seeing into the window of who Evan had become and how he lived in love. Certainly his suffering is finished as he celebrates complete freedom and joy and love in the purity of Christ's presence. But, his consolation is your desolation. I know you will never be a family of three, and that you will always live with his presence and absence. It was so profound to see what a treasure he was in his 19 years. And, Ashley, thank you for letting us see your grief and hear your articulation of this new reality for all of you. I will continue to think of you and hold you actively in my heart, in my spirit where our God of all love and compassion dwells and holds us as one body...when you feel crushed, please know I am holding you.

I can still picture him bouncing on the trampoline and hearing the sweet sound of a child's laughter… It's something I remember seeing often when I lived with Sarah as your next door neighbours. I imagine him in heaven now bouncing on a trampoline with Jesus, completely free of worry… Remembering Evan fondly and thinking of you all...
my heart is with you as you mourn the passing of Evan.  May God comfort you and hold you close to.His heart.
We were all saddened when we heard the news of Evan's passing.  Our deepest  condolences 💐 for Andrew, Julia, Ashley, and family.  We are upholding you all in daily prayer 🙏 to our Lord Father God ✝️
Sweet Evan, it breaks my heart to see you go. I cherish the time I worked and served with you. Thank you for being such a great listener. I have learned so much from you. You were full of questions, curious to learn, and you cared so much about others. You were always there to help and so responsible. Thank you for being such a good faithful servant. I will miss you so much. I’ll miss seeing you in our huddles, I’ll miss you seeing you lie on the couch, I’ll miss our lunches, I will miss your questions, I will miss your sweet smile. I hope you are having a blast with Jesus, and asking him lots of questions! See you again, my friend.
