Eugenia's obituary

Eugenia C. O’Neill
Eugenia (Jean) C. O’Neill, 94, of Gladwyne PA passed away peacefully on August 1. Jean was much loved by family and friends who cherished time spent with her in her hometown of Scranton, her homes in Rosemont, Villanova and finally, Waverly Heights.
Daughter of the late Dominick and Caroline Donato Crapelli, she was born in Scranton, PA on January 22, 1927.
Jean was the beloved wife of the late William Gordon O'Neill. Devoted mother of William G. O'Neill (Katherine Garrett), Tim O'Neill (Mary Kate Stamateris), Tom O'Neill and Ellen O'Neill (Anthony Fazio).

She is also survived by 6 grandchildren.
Jean met Bill ("Govie") at Dunmore High School, but didn't date him until he was an undergrad at Penn State. She was seeing his roommate when Govie finally came to his senses and intercepted his roommate's letters from Jean, throwing them away, and asking Jean out. They married in 1948 at Nativity church in Scranton. After graduating from Penn Law School, Jean and Govie moved to Maywood, N.J., where Bill Jr. was born, followed by Tim and Tom. The family moved to Rosemont, PA in 1960 and Ellen was born in 1962. One of the biggest regrets of Jean's life was leaving her beloved Meadowood Road neighbors in '69 for a new home in Villanova and, especially in her later years, she often asked to be driven past the house with the big white rock in the front yard to reminiscence.

Jean enjoyed doing volunteer work and spent 29 years at Bryn Mawr Hospital working as a Patient Advocate and, after moving to Waverly Heights in Gladwyne, spent many happy hours volunteering in the resident’s thrift shop, Windfall. Jean also joined the movie committee where she was one of the first to master the complicated technology of projecting digital movies. She also routinely advocated for foreign and avant garde films to be added to the repertoire.

But nothing made Jean happier than preparing the Italian meals passed down from her mother's side of the family, and often hosted dinners for her kids' athletic teams where no number of guests was too many and her veal cutlet and buttered spaghetti feasts became locally renowned.
In summers and throughout the year, Jean loved to travel to her vacation home on Poverty Beach, Cape May. It was in Cape May that Jean enjoyed a much longed for post-lockdown reunion with her grandchildren, nieces and nephews just 10 days before she passed. She was alert and sharp as a tack as usual and was able to have treasured final conversations with each of her loved ones, something our family will be forever grateful for.

Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing Thursday from 7 to 9 PM at McConaghy Funeral Home, 328 W. Lancaster Ave., Ardmore or on Friday morning at St. John Vianney Church, 350 Conshohocken State Rd., Gladwyne PA viewing from 10 to 10:45 AM with Funeral Mass to follow at 11 AM. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, West Conshohocken, PA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Waverly Foundation Scholarship Fund, 1400 Waverly Rd., Gladwyne PA 19035 or to the Scleroderma Research Foundation, 220 Montgomery St., Suite 484, San Francisco CA 94104 or to The Juvenile Law Center, 1315 Walnut St., #400, Philadelphia PA 19107.
