Eugene's obituary

Eugene Smith was born on May 24, 1949 in Morgan, GA to Eugene Smith, Sr. and Christine (Hall) Smith Wester.

Gene was a very hard worker who established his strong work ethic by laboring in the field along side his parents, as sharecroppers.

As the oldest of the family's eleven (11) children , Gene assumed significant responsibility helping to raise his brothers and sisters after his father passed away.

Gene married Annette Brown in 1971 and they had one daughter, Tiyenette. Many people remember how Gene's smile lit up a room. His biggest smiles where when he used to pick up his little girl. As she got older, Tiyenette visited her daddy in Philadelphia where he would take her for long motorcycle rides and later taught her how to drive.

His grandchildren - Kiki, JaVontay, Nisha and Lonnie - and his great grandchildren were more precious to Gene than they may know.

Gene was always athletic. He sparred with Muhammad Ali in his late teens and loved playing basketball pick-up games in W. Philadelphia with friends as well as members of the Philadelphia 76ers inclduing Dr. J.

When Gene moved north, he managed Martin Jolles Antiques for 13 years. He met his second wife, Janet Unger in 1981 as one of the many people he greeted passing by the antique shop. Gene and Janet were together for over 35 years.

In 1984, he established Gene's Moving Service. Gene enjoyed a loyal customer following that sustained the business for 25 years. In 2008, the Pennsylvania Moving & Storage Associates recognized Gene's Moving Service as the member Mover of the Year.

Gene enjoyed cooking in large quantities and was famous for his sweet potato pies at family gatherings. He took advantage of any opportunity to be by the water and going fishing. He also treasured time in the country where he marveled at the wonders of nature.

Gene returned to Florida a few years ago and was grateful for the love and support of his family. Gene was 68 years old when he passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home on November 11, 2017 in Quincy, Florida.

Gene was a good hearted person who did things to help a lot of people. Many loved ones will miss Gene's warm, friendly, generous and kind spirit.
