Eugene's obituary
Dr. Eugene Beach Small of Colesville, MD, age 88, A retired Professor of Protozoology at the University of Maryland, died peacefully in his sleep July 1st, 2019 at Brooke Grove Nursing and Rehab Center after a decade long struggle with COPD and dementia. Gene is survived by: his wife Bootsy, his children, Jeff Small, Dan Small, Jon Small, Kathy Klein and Danielle Murnieks, six grand-children and five great grand-children. Gene grew up in depression era Flint Michigan with a loving mother and devoted stepfather who worked at the local General Motors plant. It was summer jobs of factory work that convinced Gene he needed to do something different. A gifted student, he attended Wayne State University earning bachelors and Masters degrees in biology. Gene was drafted at the end of the Korean war to serve in postwar Germany as an
Army medic, and after returning to the US, moved to Los Angeles where he pursued his PhD at UCLA. He served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois, and eventually moved to the University of Maryland in 1972 where he taught protozoology and the natural history of the Bay for 35 years. Gene loved life and the people within it, good work, good food, good music, good friends and the Washington Redskins. His family would like to acknowledge the tireless effort and amazing care that he has received over the past decade by the staff at Brooke Grove Foundation in Sandy Spring, Maryland. There are no words for our gratitude.
Gene donated his remains to the Maryland Anatomy Board; so appropriate for the scientist who taught so many in life to continue to do so in death.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation in Gene’s name. Gene loved the bay, it’s history, flora and fauna.
