Missing you much, Zhenia. Your warm smile, your energy, your humour, your gentleness, your esprit, the vastness of your imagination, knowing that you would always be there as a friend, that you would understand. That your generous welcome would never change. That much did not even need to be said. That you would find a way to brighten everyone's day or evening, with music and dancing, with anecdotes that would pour out of you like a gurgling, never ebbing waterfall. Thank you for bringing joy and brightness to so many of us.

You lived well. I think by traveling the world, discovering and engaging cultures, languages, peoples, shapes, colours, and histories, you felt the joy you yielded in engagement would spread through the ether. And it did. You made this world more fun, more gentle, more colourful, more creative.

I received a reminder that Eugene would have turned 52 today. I randomly encountered him at the crossroads of 43rd St/8th Ave in early spring 2019. We exchanged greetings before quickly disappearing into the crowd again. New York feels immense, not just in terms of physical space but in the connections between people. It's rare to run into someone you know on the street, even if you live just a few blocks apart. Eugene was incredibly kind and warm-hearted. Wishing him a happy birthday in another world.

Lu and I were so shocked and saddened to hear of Eugene's passing. We will always remember him as a kind, generous and open. He had a great passion for learning and discovery, as his dedication to learning Chinese to better communicate with Echo's family showed.

Unfortunately we will not be able to attend the service, but we will be there in spirit and will always have Eugene and Echo in our thoughts. Condolences to Echo and Eugene's family and friends.
