Eugene's obituary

It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandpa, brother, and dearest friend, Eugene Frank Masciarelli. Gene was a very youthful 82 years of age when he returned to California from Colombia and his strength kept him alert until he reached 86. Gene is survived and greatly missed by his loving daughters, Lauren Weingram and Mandy Masciarelli; his son, David Susuras; his brother, James Masciarelli; and his sisters in law, Judi Masciarelli and Norma Masciarelli. He is forever remembered by his four grandchildren: Adam, Jacob (a.k.a. Ren), and Isaac Weingram, and Alex Dolven.

Gene was born in Marlborough, MA on March 12, 1939. He is predeceased by his parents Rocco Masciarelli and Adeline (Rossi) Masciarelli of Westboro, MA his brother John Masciarelli. Gene attended public schools in Westboro and spent one year after graduation at Lowell Tech. He then traveled to Kansas University where he earned a degree in industrial design. He had various design and city planning positions in the Kansas City area. Then his family moved to Chula Vista, CA for a city planning job and they bought a house in La Mesa nearby. He and his family moved back to Kansas City for a time but ultimately he got a planning position with San Mateo County and lived in Palo Alto where he bought a house in 1973. He worked for a land development company in Redwood City with Mobil Corp. and retired at age 55. Upon retiring, he moved to Buena Vista, Mexico and started a tourist business in addition to serving as a rental agent for Americans with vacation properties.

Gene was happiest when Mandy and Laurie were in elementary school. He assisted with science projects, created a tricycle wagon for Lauren to take her kittens in the Palo Alto spring parade, helped devise years of unique halloween costumes, and took them skiing and camping many times.

Gene’s great gift was his ability to talk with anyone, no matter where they were from. He fostered this gift in his girls from the time they were small and it continues to enrich their lives and relationships. Gene’s humor kept the joy in the moment and kept Mandy and Laurie on task when needed. He found ways for family and friends to realize their abilities and to overcome obstacles in their lives. He taught creative ways to negotiate with empathy and kindness.

Gene had a great enthusiasm for travel and lived in many locations around the United States and other countries. His kindness and generosity was felt by many friends around the world. Wherever he went, from California to Mexico to Colombia, he was loved by many in the community and sought for his wise, empathetic companionship.

Gene will be forever remembered and missed.
