I just learned of Gene's death. Very sad news. Gene and I worked together for about 5 years in Kansas City. We were friends outside of work. We once made a canoe trip on the Kansas River from Lawrence to DeSoto. After I moved with my wife and children to Oregon in 1970 we stayed in touch with the Masciarellis. Sometime in the 70's our family traveled to Palo Alto to stay with the Masciarellis. During that stay one night Gene and I went into SF to attend a party. I last saw Gene in about 1986 at the SF airport. He came to see me when I was waiting for a connecting flight. I knew he had moved to Baja California but lost track of him after that. Great guy. Wonderful memories. Dennis Lewis
While researching my husband's Rossi family ancestry, (1st cousin of Gene), Gene and I began e-mailing each other for several years while he was still in Colombia. It was great hearing about Westborough as he knew it and I was able to give him information about his ancestors, about some of his former neighbors who were kind to him as a boy, and also his son, David Susuras. I will miss our very interesting and informative conversations on many subjects.

Dear Dad,

Thank you for teaching me so much which is more important than you realize. Your humor keeps the joy in the moment and me on task when I need prodding. Your zest for new experiences and people taught me the joys of kindness to others and how to reach out and befriend the new person, the outsider, the person who does not yet see how they fit into any setting. This helped me when even my top rival who became one of my closest friends in the world. Your ability to see the gold in the lesson or challenge or budget constraint serves me everyday, and especially in my teaching. Thank you for finding ways for me to realize my ability to overcome and find ways around obstacles in my life.

The biggest gift you shared is an ability to talk with others. You helped me grow this confidence from the time I was very small and it continues to serve me well today. I have had the courage to talk to famous people, new people and people on the edge. It helps me reach all sorts of children in my teaching, especially those with emotional or stressful life situations or learning challenges. I pray I can tap into some of your love and connection in my work with others. I love you so much.
We met Gene in Spa Buenavista Baja Sur Mexico. Gene and shared a subscription to The Economist magazine. We discussed world affairs and other topical issues. I believe Gene is in the next world arguing key political issues of our crazy times. Voya con Dios, Gene.
Below is a posting from our Baja community newsletter.
On December 11, Baja lost yet another old timer. Gene Masciarelli came to Spa Buenavista in the mid ’80s. He founded a property management business, trained and provided work for many locals. Gene was a great raconteur, loved opera, and visited Medellin Columbia most summers to enjoy opera and beautiful women! The last years of Gene’s life were consumed Alzheimer’s disease. He died surrounded by his family. The family has set up a website in Celebration of Gene.

My deepest condolences to the family.

I am so glad that Masciarelli family has been a part of my life. Growing up, I got to know Laurie not long after the family moved to Palo Alto, and I probably spent 50% of my time at their house. Gene  was the best father--full of ideas, and not just ideas--there was seemingly no project he could not execute with incredible speed. If Laurie wanted something, he could build it! He took such pride in his daughters, and I remember him teaching them (and me) the finer things in life. He was a gourmet.  I remember him letting me taste caviar and aoli sauce for artichokes.  These were truly exotic to me. We had many adventures, and the family was so generous to take me along: Tahoe, hiking/camping, Russian River, Marine World, Great America--far too many to list. He could be commanding (to create order or minimize danger) but never strict. He was principled and a person of high standards, and a father who was very kind to his children and their friends. He watched us do so many skits and dance routines, always smiling and laughing. I can only imagine that would get tedious, yet he never showed it. I will always remember those days. It was a magical childhood in so many ways, and it would never have existed without Eugene being such a big part of it.

I was so sorry to hear about Eugene's passing. He was such an adventurer and loving father person.
