Eugene's obituary

Eugene Chi-Chung Lui, 53, of San Francisco, CA, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2023, after a lengthy and challenging battle with diabetes and renal failure.

Eugene was born on November 24, 1969 to Chan-Chark Lui and Evelyn Yan Lui at the Chinese Hospital in San Francisco, California. Eugene graduated from West Portal Lutheran School in 1983, and was a proud member of the Fightin’ Irish at Sacred Heart High School where he graduated in 1987. Eugene explored higher education experiences at Ball State University in Indiana and the Normal University in Taipei, Taiwan.

Ultimately, Eugene pursued his life-long passion and love of the military, enlisting with the United States Marine Corps in April 1990. He went through boot camp at Marine Corp Depot San Diego followed by basic training at the famed 29 Palms military base in the high desert of Southern California. In 1991, he was ordered to active duty in support of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and participated in the NATO Exercise Battle Griffin. Private First Class Lui had a primary specialty as a Field Radio Operator, and he earned the National Defense Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, and Rifle Marksman Badge. Eugene was Honorably Discharged and continued his service as a reserve until 1998. Following his active military service, he continued to serve his community working at Coast Guard Island and as a law enforcement officer and security specialist with the San Francisco Patrol Special Police, which has provided safety and patrol services for San Francisco neighborhoods since 1847.

Eugene is survived by his beloved son Michael Siu-Fung Lui, ex-wife Cheryl Lew, father Chan-Chark Lui; mother Evelyn Yan Lui; brother Calvin Chi-Yan Lui and his partner Christine Choi; brother Patrick Chi-Leung Lui and his wife Tiffany Tisen; and nephews and nieces Allison Grace Lui, Nicholas Bryant Lui, Camryn Evelyn Lui, and Chaydin Luca Kangyi Lui.
