Dr. Fontenot’s memory and spirit will be lovingly preserved by Reina, his wife of 43 years, their two children, David and Angelique and Gene’s brother, Dr. James T. Fontenot. Dr. Fontenot is preceded in death by his parents Ana Fontenot and Eugene Joseph Fontenot, Sr.
On a grave marker, a person’s lifespan is expressed with a date of birth and a date of death, separated by a dash. In her poem ‘The Dash,’ Linda Ellis eloquently says, “…that dash represents all the time they spent alive on earth and now only those who loved them, know what that little line is worth. For it matters not how much we own, the cars… the house… the cash. What matters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash.”
Dr. Fontenot had a dash that most could only admire and aspire to.
His was a dash defined by four loves— love of learning, love of country, and most of all, his love for his family and his GOD.
Dr. Fontenot’s love of learning, is evidenced by the degrees he earned over his lifetime. Dr. Fontenot’s educational achievements began with a Bachelor of Science from Louisiana State University. Next, Dr. Fontenot set his sights on medical school and enrolled in the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara in Guadalajara, Mexico. Dr. Fontenot earned his MD there. Already able to speak French, Dr. Fontenot acquired fluency in the Spanish language, as the medical school curriculum was entirely in Spanish. Years later, Dr. Fontenot would return to school to earn a Master in Public Health from Tulane University and a Law Degree from South Texas College of Law in Houston.
In addition to his many degrees, Dr. Fontenot also held a commercial pilot’s license and had spent time learning to fly amphibian planes. He was also a certified scuba diver, trumpet player, philanthropist, ballroom dancer, and a trained sous chef.
Dr. Fontenot loved his country. He was drafted into the United States Navy and served as a battlefield surgeon in the Viet Nam War. Years later, after a successful career as a physician and hospital owner, Dr. Fontenot became an expert in public policy, voraciously consuming content on the subject, which led Dr. Fontenot to become politically active to repair what he saw as a broken political system. Dissatisfied with the status quo, Dr. Fontenot decided to run for United States Congress in 1994. He won the Republican nomination in the 25th Congressional District, but narrowly fell short of victory in the general election. He also ran in the 8th Congressional District. Later, Dr. Fontenot returned to medicine. He worked at UTMB/TDCJ as Medical Director and Clinician. He then went on to work at the Harris County Sheriff’s Office as a physician. He also worked for Veterans’ Evaluation Services.
Dr. Fontenot experienced love at first sight when he met Reina Stanley, a beautiful young Honduran lady in a New Orleans pharmacy. Dr. Fontenot would often tell the story — with his infectious grin on full display — that to gain her attention, he performed his version of a Mexican Hat Dance. It must have been a great dance, because he ended up winning her heart and sparking a romance that burned until his last breath. Reina loved him and admired him for he was always respectful and behaved like a gentleman and appreciated the Spanish tradition of chaperoning. After three years of marriage, they built a loving family with their two children David and Angelique, who gave him so much pride.
It was his faith in God, his love for her and hers for him, that gave Dr. Fontenot the power to stave off death’s inevitable sting in his battle against cancer for so long. For his faith and trust came from his daily meditation on the scriptures, as in Psalm 18:2 says, “The Lord is my Rock, and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my strength, in Whom I will trust; my buckler and the horn of my salvation and my high tower.” Also, Psalm 27:1 says, “The Lord is my light and my salvation whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life, of whom shall I be afraid?”
In the final days of his fight, it was Gene’s love of GOD that gave him comfort in the knowledge that he and Reina would be reunited one day and spend eternity in each other’s arms, the place he loved most.

Eugene Joseph “Gene” Fontenot, Jr. MD, MPH, JD de Spring, Tejas, comenzó su vida eterna el 4 de abril de 2021. Tenía 85 años en el momento de su muerte. El Dr. Fontenot, que nunca se retractó en su batalla, desafió las probabilidades y luchó contra el cáncer durante cuatro años, después de un diagnóstico que predijo solo de siete a diez meses.
La memoria y el espíritu del Dr. Fontenot, serán preservados con amor por Reina, su esposa de 43 años, sus dos hijos David y Angelique y el hermano de Gene, el Dr. James T. Fontenot. El Dr. Fontenot es precedido en la muerte por sus padres Ana Fontenot y Eugene Joseph Fontenot, Sr.
En una lápida, la vida útil de una persona se expresa con una fecha de nacimiento y una fecha de muerte, separadas por un guión. En su poema “El Guión,” (The Dash), Linda Ellis dice elocuentemente, "... ese guión representa todo el tiempo que pasaron vivos en la tierra y ahora solo aquellos que los amaron, saben lo que vale esa pequeña línea. Porque no importa cuánto poseémos, los autos ... la casa ... el efectivo. Lo que importa es cómo vivimos y amamos y cómo usámos nuestro guión (carrera).”
El Dr. Fontenot tenía un guión, que la mayoría solo puede admirar y aspirar.
El fué un guión definido por cuatro amores: amor por el aprendizaje, amor por la patria y sobre todo, su amor por su familia y su DIOS.
El amor al aprendizaje del Dr. Fontenot, se evidencia por las maestrías y títulos que obtuvo a lo largo de su vida.
Los logros educativos del Dr. Fontenot comenzáron con una licenciatura en ciencias de la Universidad Estatal de Louisiana. Luego, el Dr. Fontenot puso su mirada en los estudios de medicina y se inscribió en la Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara, en Guadalajara, México, en donde obtuvo su doctorado. Hablaba francés y adquirió fluidez en el idioma de español, ya que el plan de estudios de la universidad de medicina era completamente en español. Años más tarde, el Dr. Fontenot obtuvo una Maestría en Salud Pública de la Universidad de Tulane y una Licenciatura en Derecho de la Facultad de Derecho del Sur de Tejas, en Houston.
Además de sus muchos títulos, el Dr. Fontenot también tenía una licencia de piloto comercial y había pasado tiempo aprendiendo a volar aviones anfibios. También fué buzo certificado, trompetista, filántropo, bailarín de salón y subchef capacitado.
El Dr. Fontenot amaba a su país. Fue reclutado a la armada Naval de los Estados Unidos y se desempeñó como cirujáno en el campo de batalla en la Guerra de Vietnam. Años más tarde, depués de una exitosa carrera como médico y propietario de un hospital, el Dr. Fontenot se convirtió en un experto en reglas y normas públicas, consumiendo vorazmente el contenido sobre el tema, lo que llevó al Dr. Fontenot a involucrarse en la política, para reparar lo que veía como un sistema político roto. También trabajó para los Servicios de Evaluación de Veteranos.
El Dr. Fontenot experimentó el amor a primera vista cuando conoció a Reina Stanley, una hermosa joven hondureña en una farmacia de Nueva Orleans. El Dr. Fontenot solía contar la historia con su sonrisa contagiosa en plena exhibición, que para llamar la atención de Reina, interpretó su versión de un baile del sombrero mexicano. Debió haber sido un gran baile, porque terminó ganando su corazón y provocando un romance que ardió hasta su último aliento. Reina lo amaba y lo admiraba porque siempre era respetuoso y se comportaba como un caballero y apreciaba la tradición hispana de chaperón. Después de tres años de matrimonio, formaron una familia amorosa con sus dos hijos David y Angelique, quienes le dieron tanto orgullo.
Fué su fé en Dios, su amor por ella y el de ella por él, lo que le dió al Dr. Fontenot el poder de evitar el inevitable aguijón de la muerte en su batalla contra el cáncer, durante tanto tiempo. Porque su fé y confianza provienen de su meditación diaria en las Sagradas Escrituras, como dice el Salmo 18:2, “El Señor es mi Roca, mi fortaleza, mi libertador, mi Dios, mi fortaleza, en Quien confiaré; mi escudo, el cuerno de mi salvación y mi torre alta.” Tambien, el Salmo 27:1 dice: “El Señor es mi luz y mi salvación, ¿a quién temeré? El Señor es la fuerza de mi vida, ¿de quién tendré miedo?
En los últimos días de su pelea, fué el amor de Gene a DIOS, lo que le dió consuelo, al saber que él y Reina se reunirán un día y pasarían la eternidad abrazados, el lugar que más amaba.
