Gene was known for his dry humor, conservative viewpoint, and an admirable work ethic that he embodied throughout his life. He held high the principles of honesty and hard work, always teaching those who were fortunate enough to know him that it was vital to be honest and to prioritize work before play. His intelligence and work ethic were not just personal traits, but lessons he passed on to his loved ones.

Perhaps one of his most remarkable accomplishments was the development and teaching of a communications program within the military sphere. His dedication to service and his unwavering commitment to his duties were apparent and well-respected.
Gene not only fostered an illustrious career but also a contented family life. In 1970, he embarked on the journey of marriage. He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years Sharon Dorrough, only daughter, Elisa Dorrough-Ewing, who has inherited her father's love of education and honest hard work, and 3 grandchildren: Hunter Ewing, Alexandria Ewing, and Gabrielle Ewing. He also is survived by his brother David Dorrough and nephew Daniel Dorrough. He was proceeded in death by his mother Ruth Rountree Dorrough, father, Eugene Calvin Dorrough Sr., his brother John Dorrough, and his grandchild Preston Ewing.
Gene's greatest legacy will be inspiring the pursuit of education in his child and grandchildren, as well as the lessons of honesty and hard work that he instilled in them. He will be immensely missed, but his values will live on, influencing and inspiring those he has left behind.
