My favorite thing about Uncle Gene was his smile. Right after he smiled his eyes would twinkle. He was always so kind no matter what. I miss seeing him at family gatherings, but I am glad that he is not in pain anymore. Love, Barb Gbur

I first met Gene in the summer of 1963 in Pete Wolsko's breezeway. It was during one of their mentoring sessions, of which there were may. What was consistent with Gene over the next 50+ years was that he was a good human being. He had a sensitivity to and for people, was a very good listner and always looking to help or serve.
He loved stories, whether telling one or listening to one. And the stories always had an element of humor and laughter. As we got older and the stories got older, more was left to the imagination and that added to the fun. I always loved sitting at a table with Gene and Wally Soroka. Our three distinct perspectives amped up the BS and there were waves of laughter.
Jan and I loved to do the 75 mile drive to St John for family gatherings. It was the closest we came to "country living". We would always rehash the experiences on the ride home and the kids would ask "how are we related to all those people...there were no Wolsko's there?"
When Jan got sick, I could feel Gene's angst and sadness when he saw her. He would always pull me aside and give me a pep talk which I would pass on to Jan. Her comment...That's Gene, he really cares!
One of the times Gene and Lil drove up North, Gene was intrigued by a "shaking machine" we bought for Jan. One of the functions was not working and Gene got down on the floor of the garage to do some diagnostics during the party! Then he told me what was wrong and mailed some parts a few weeks later.
Gene, I am sorry that you did not want a wake or memorial sevice but in true South Side fashion I will continue to Celebrate your Life through caring, serving, laughter, dancing and "having one for you". See you some day up in South Side Heaven:)
Love,
Gunnar
