Ethel's obituary
She later moved to Oxnard, California, with her parents and obtained a Certificate in Nursing from Ventura College. She was also a member of Saint Paul Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Hosea N. Edwards.
In 1977, she relocated to Los Angeles, where she attended South West College, and became a licensed Registered Nurse. As a Registered Nurse, she worked at Cedar Sinai and Santa Monica Hospitals. In 1989, she moved to Moreno Valley, California and worked at Kaiser Hospital and managed the nursing unit. Ethel retired from nursing when she saw her parents needed more care and assistance. She cared for her parents until their deaths.
It was in 1995 when Ethel met and married the love of her life, Gregory T. Johnson. They soon moved to the San Bernardino, California, area where they both cared for her parents and raised a host of children together.
Anyone who met Ethel could not forget her infectious smile and desire to love and help others. She had an uncanny ability to reach people in a deep and positive way. She was devoted to her family and they meant the world to her. Since she was a young child, she had a nurturing spirit. As a kid, she was known to always be in the house helping to take care of her younger siblings. This nurturing nature continued into adulthood, as she helped raised generations of nieces, nephews, her children, grandchildren and godchildren. She enjoyed simple pleasures like – family gatherings, chatting with friends/family, cooking, eating and beach days. When you saw her, you automatically knew there was a squad behind her. She also knew the importance of vacation time with her husband, which she was committed to annually. Ethel truly lived her life unapologetically for others and she would not have it any other way. Finally, there was no denying her deep love for Jesus Christ and her church, “All People Unity Baptist”, with her godparents, Felix Roger Jones and Phyllis Jones. Ethel was definitely a woman of faith, love and compassion.
Preceding her in death, her father and mother, Rev. Alonzo Washington, Sr., and Jessie Lee Washington; six siblings – Ernestine Higgins, Magnolia Woodard, Emma McKinney, Eugene Washington, Walter Washington and Bessie Washington. Along with her sisters in love Judy Hooseman and Clarise Johnson.
She leaves to mourn, her husband, Gregory T. Johnson, three children, Jessica and Stacey Bursey (Detroit, MI) , Jonathan and Lucy Armstrong (Colton, CA), and JaLisa Johnson (Colton, CA); eight grandchildren; Aaliyah Armstrong, Josiah Diggs, Harmony Diggs, Makayla Armstrong, Julian Armstrong, Kai Kelly, Ivy Bursey and Israel Carter; three godchildren, Candace Smallwood, Mishelle Carter and Tyree Saunders. Six siblings, Odell/Arlether Washington (Oxnard, CA), Alonzo, Jr./Bettye Washington (Sun City, CA), Iretha Eli and Adell Washington (Hemet, CA), Mary Youngblood (Carson, CA), and Darlene Cetera (Moreno Valley, CA). One brother in love Rosie Price (San Bernardino, CA). One aunt, Velma Celestine (Camarillo, CA), a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces/nephews, cousins and friends. She is deeply missed and will never be forgotten.
