I've been friends with Ethan for as long as I can remember, truthfully. Even in elementary school I can hazily remember the lunchroom banter we used to share. He was truly a special friend and I knew as we got to know each other more that he was someone that I would want to keep around as long as possible. Ethan was one of the funniest people I have ever met - he would always crack me up. I remember in middle school, he would mix his lunch into a soup every day, milk and all. While peculiar, it never failed to make me giggle. He was a kind-hearted individual with natural leadership skills. Ethan is a great role model and friend. One of my favorite stories of Ethan happened when we went to the beach when we were juniors. He slowly waded through the water and ventured further into the water where it also got murky. That's when he started sprinting back to the safety of the beach screaming "THERE'S SOME STUFF IN HERE!!!" I cherish all the memories we had and am truly grateful to have had him as a friend. I will never forget Ethan. He will always be in my thoughts. Whenever I feel like giving up, I will think of him as he demonstrated inner strength and perseverance. I'm deeply saddened by his passing - my condolences go out to the Rhodig family. I am sorry for your loss.

Farewell old friend - until we cross paths again.

Brian, Lori, Josh, Jenna & Jake,
We were shocked and saddened to hear about Ethan. Wish we were able to give everyone a big hug. We have endless memories over the years watching Ethan grow from a shy little boy when you first moved in next door to a young confident man. Somewhere along the way, he even got taller than Josh! Thinking of you all and sending our love and prayers to you. We will always keep Ethan in our hearts.
Love Rob, Tina, Garrett & Gilly

For 8 years, Ethan was among the core people I had in my life. Whether it was through our times together in concert band throughout middle & high school, or competing together with fencing, we were always working toward excellence. Even if it wasn't always expressed, we did our best to strive for excellence together.

Ethan was my training partner throughout all of fencing. We were friends before we were teammates, so I was stepping into one of his many domains when we both started on the team. He became part of pushing me, driving me on through competition with one another. Ethan, myself, and others would always push for one more set, one more lap, one more round. There were times where I became angered at how I performed, but Ethan was always there to keep me going. To keep pushing to be better than yesterday. Even after graduation, he would still reach out in times of physical strife and encourage me to keep pushing for improvement.
Even though we were both stubborn with each other, it was out of a desire for self-betterment and to push each other to be better people. Ethan made me a better person. He was a better friend than he probably realized, and the person that made me a better competitor and person than I am now. Until we meet again old friend, thank you for all that you've done.

I hope you will all find solace in the love and respect that he brought to so many. The prayers of many are with you.

I first met Ethan back when I was still a homeschooler. I had just joined the Thames River Fencing Club and was a relatively new fencer as well. He and I would always fence on Saturdays and I am pretty sure I never beat him. In fact, since I was shorter he always had a longer reach. I do remember out of that time that I was the one he was fencing when he sprained (I think it was a sprain) his ankle at club and he was out for a few weeks. I had no idea that only a few years later, he and I would be teammates for ELHS. I never spent a whole bunch of time with Ethan, (seeing how we were at different schools altogether that would have been hard) but I did enjoy the times we did talk. Especially as the both of us matured in and off the piste, I saw a fierce determination, something that drove him always to be better and to be the best, so that no one would catch him off guard. While we never did talk about anything serious, I feel the both of us developed a mutual respect for each other. I, in terms of his foil abilities, and him, with my reputation in sabre/the other two weapons. Some of my favorite memories with Ethan were sitting down at fencing meets and discussing how other fencers could be beaten based on their previous matches, or when he and I would take photos to collect for the end of the year slideshow. He was a no-nonsense guy, down earth, cut the bull-type. And I appreciate it. But it also made me happy to see him take the time to change his approach when a teammate who wasn't that style of personality just so they could understand what he was trying to tell them. It showed me that underneath the tough, no-nonsense face he put up, he really did care. I didn't expect this so soon Ethan. I am devastated that you had to leave us now. I will miss you til the day I go. My condolences to your family and my heart and prayers are with you all.

I had the pleasure of being Ethans captain his junior year, our 3 man men's foil dream team that beat the odds and crushed it in team states.

Ethan and I had a lot of adventures together, almost all of them ended in us making such a funny error that we cried laughing at ourselves. One that stands out was our 2017 camping trip. Me, Ethan, and 2 more of our friends planned a 2 night camping trip, we thought Ethan was bringing a bigger car but he of course showed up in Sydney. We then spent the next hour standing in my driveway cramming camping supplies into the trunk of a Honda Civic and repeating to eachother "It'll fit". We were incredibly unprepared and forgot even the most basic of things including water, so we lived on Brisk tea and a gallon of chocolate milk for the next couple days. A memory of Ethan I will never forget was our first night, we also forgot utensils and seasoning for our meat so we spent 30 minutes standing in the pouring rain and complete darkness cooking ground beef with nothing but Ethans pocket knife and a pan that barely heated up, laughing so hard we were crying the entire time. What seemed to be a disaster in every way was a weekend I will never forget with a friend that I will love forever. I couldn't ask for a better adventure buddy. I'm going to miss you a lot Ethan, but I'll never forget the times we spent together.

Ethan and I were part of the same crew team back in high school. To be frank, it was often quite difficult. Practice was long and wearying. We always seemed to be struggling, lacking the numbers required to field boats that were competitive with other schools. Still, Ethan showed up to practice every day. He came with a no-nonsense attitude and the expectation that he was there to better himself, regardless of how any of us wished to complain or lie inert on the ground. In my senior year, I rowed the men’s four with Ethan as our captain and stroke seat. That is, Ethan sat in the stern of the boat, where everyone else could see him, and he set the pace for the boat. To row a crew boat, especially a four, one cannot simply paddle as fast as possible. Each stroke must be controlled, precise, and elegant, lest you lose control of the set or sacrifice your energy to inefficient strokes. Now, to add to the difficulty, one must be able to maintain this level of control while bone-weary and exhausted, 1000 meters into a race with no end in sight. For the rest of us, we merely had to imitate Ethan’s stroke— but for Ethan, he could only rely on his own discipline. But somehow, Ethan remained steady and in control. The year I rowed with Ethan was the only year where I won a meaningful medal, second place at the state championship. That same year a slew of excellent novice rowers joined, giving promise for the future of East Lyme men’s crew. I hope that Ethan’s legacy, a commitment to hard work and excellence under pressure, pervades the spirit of East Lyme Crew and continues to inspire us all. He will be dearly missed by those who knew him.

I knew Ethan in highschool, used to call him Omaha. He was one of the only guys on the crew team who I knew that was genuinely nice and cared about everyone. There were days I would walk home since I lived about a mile away and he would offer without hesitation to drive me.

He was always the funniest person in the group, constantly having the impressions of celebrities, funny noises and quick wit to fill a conversation with laughter.

Ethan had always been that one guy to make sure you were okay, no matter who you are. He was willing to go out of his way to console someone or talk to them when it was a difficult conversation.

He will be missed and remembered for the rest of my life. My condolences to the family. I also want to thank the family for raising such a well rounded and great person.

Dear Lori and Family...I am shocked and saddened by the news of Ethan's passing. Frankly, I cannot believe it. I had the honor of teaching Ethan in middle school and of watching Ethan grow and graduate in HS. Shy and sweet, Ethan was a hard worker and kind human being. I remember staying after school with Ethan and helping him. He was serious about doing well in school. As I grew to know Ethan, I would see him outside the ELHS. He had come into his own---he always shared a warm smile and sincere hello. Again---I am so deeply sorry for your loss and our loss. My heart and prayers are with you.
Sincerely,
Liz Brouillard

I am so sorry for your loss... Ethan was my stroke seat for a lot of my senior year in high school, and he never failed to make me laugh. Some of my best memories from crew were because Ethan was in my boat - I would always mix up port and starboard, and we always poked fun at that. When I think of Ethan, I can't help but smile from all the memories. He touched the hearts of many... I know he definitely did for me. He will truly be missed and my heart goes out to all.
