Megan, I was so sorry of Ethan’s passing. He was delightful. I enjoyed every interaction I had with him at work in Charleston. The one memory that stands out though, was in a phone conversation after you two had moved away. I can’t remember why he called or why he brought you up in the conversation but I will never forget how much love was in his voice when he spoke of you. Brought tears to my eyes then and when I think of it now. He was a beautiful soul.

Megan, I am so very sorry for your loss.  Know that my love and prayers are and will be with you as walk through the days, weeks and months ahead.  I am praying for your peace.
Ethan, you will always be a wizard over many things. We started collaborating together over a dozen years ago, working to solve the biggest problem the Nation faced from natural disasters: storm surge. You expertly created GIS graphics and products as we tested and pivoted between one version after another. You created creative, intuitive images, and then moved on to creating the models that predict those storm surges. Without you, the agency wouldn't have been able to solve this problem, consulting partners, testing products, and growing it's capacity to communicate risk. As a result, our team made one of the biggest advancements in risk communication in a long time: storm surge inundation maps, used during hurricane forecasts to warn the public about how to stay safe. What an accomplishment! Later, I saw how you brought that same creative eye to other activities, sharing beautiful photos from many other adventures. Thank you for your partnerships, and your contributions will be missed by so many of us.

I'm very saddened to learn of Ethan's passing. As a fellow alum of ODU Geography and current department chair, we shared a lot of common interests in GIS, hurricanes, and coasts. His work at the hurricane center supported innumerable students and practitioners with tremendous impact. These waves will ripple forever. My sincere condolences to Ethan's family and friends.

Ethan was a wonderful son-in-law and I loved him dearly. I hope he knew that. On his birthday I always said Happy Birthday to my favorite son-in-law. He was my only son-in-law. He always laughed. We were so incredibly blessed to have him in our family, but the time was far too short. The pain and the tears just don’t stop. My heart is shattered.

Really miss Ethan.  We would chat each other at least weekly about weather, life, cool GIS stuff.  During this time of the year, hurricane season, I miss him even more.  His legend will live on at OCM.  He will always be the father of the Historical Hurricane Tracks tool, our most visited tool ever!!!  Keep mapping Ethan!!

I'm so sad to hear of Ethan's passing.  Always kind with a funny observation to mention. I enjoyed knowing him and will miss him.

Ethan will be missed tremendously. He worked tirelessly to help create software to plot Historical Hurricane Tracks. He was always willing to help us at NHC with making special graphics shown at numerous conferences. And he loved fishing in the Florida Keys. These pics show one of his very successful days. Pics provided by Richard Stanczyk, owner of Bud ‘N Mary’s Marina, who Ethan fished with for over 25 years.
