Ernest August Victor Smart AKA Ernie passed peacefully in his sleep surrounded by his loved ones at 12.34am on 29th of August.

He shared 6 beautiful days and nights in the hospice together with his family sleeping by his side. His grandchildren playing in the garden. We shared many touching moments - tears & laughter aplenty, three generations present. The room filled with so much warmth that the nurses loved to be with Aeroplane Ern.

He was surrounded by paintings collected from his travels around the world, The Boss the soundtrack of the room.

Photos adorned his bed so the care teams knew the great man they were caring for.

And he was cared for diligently, professionally & with the utmost humanity. We could ask no more.

He waited until we had all fallen asleep after a special day sharing stories of Big E. Two minutes later, and after a round of thank yous by the family, he boarded the flight on his next adventure.

He was loved. He was safe. He was indomitable to the very end.
