Erlinda's obituary

A Mother’s Soul

Never really appreciated, many times ignored.

She would give her life for you, never asking for reward.

Her love is never ending, though sometimes it gets lost,

For you must find your own way soon, through the cold of winter’s frost.

She will always be there for you, even if not asked …

For a mother’s soul won’t wither or die …even once she’s passed.

-Katherine Martinez

Erlinda  Cruz, 94, of Union City, California, passed away on March 2, 2023, with her family by her side.

She was born on October 27, 1928, in Gamu, Isabela, Philippines.

Erlinda is survived by four children: Peter Cruz, of Palmdale, California, Butch Cruz, of Silverdale, Washington, Lui Cruz of Union City, California, and Maribel Cruz of Tasmania, Australia. She is also survived by five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Erlinda was extremely proud of her children and family, and left behind nothing but beautiful memories. As her health declined, it would be wrong to say that Erlinda lost her battle because she never stopped fighting. No matter how sick she was, she was always determined. When anyone else would have broken, Erlinda stayed strong. Through her, we know what resilience and perseverance truly looked like. There was no quit in Erlinda. Just because she is no longer here, it doesn’t mean she lost her fight.

When Erlinda’s children were young, the phrase “stay-at-home-mom” didn’t exist. It was usual for women to stay home with the children while their husbands worked. But even by the standards of the era, Erlinda was an exceptional wife and mother. She cared deeply for her family, relatives, and neighbors. She did this not out of obligation, but because of who she was. She was always the first to offer help, and she always ensured that every child who crossed her threshold was safe, healthy, and happy.

Erlinda was a passionate gardener during her strong years, and she can grow anything she plants. No doubt she’s “Mrs. Green Thumb.” She prepared meals with lots of love and those dishes were the tastiest ever that we surely will miss immensely. When she wasn’t filling her home with warmth and kindness, she could be found in her private moment praying, reading, and studying the Bible. She was a very devoted Christian and looked forward to attending Saturday church services and events.

Friends wishing to honor Erlinda are invited to make a donation in her name to Pathways Home Health and Hospice (www.pathwayshealth.org)
