Erik, I will miss you. When I first visited the campus for an interview, it was your smile and care that helped me see the beauty and possibilities of becoming a part of the USC school of social work. From my first child to the end of my tenure, you always checked in on me. Thank you for the compassion and care you showed me.

Dr. Schott, you were my favorite professor, my biggest inspiration, you helped me so much more than you could ever know. You taught me so many things and led by example, showing me what it takes to be a great social worker. Every time I was struggling or ready to give up, your words of encouragement gave me strength again. When we were stressed because of assignments, you were there to make us laugh during every class. You will be missed and I will never forget the positive impact you made in my life.

The lotus flower blooms in still waters, rising from the depths of mud and murk to open its petals in radiant beauty. It reminds us that even in the darkest and most challenging places, grace and renewal can flourish.
Erik, like the lotus, brought light and beauty into our lives, emerging from the complex journey of life to bloom with love, wisdom, and joy. Though he has passed, his essence, like the roots of the lotus, remains deeply connected to the foundation of our lives.
As the lotus closes its petals at night and opens again each day, let his memory inspire us to find moments of hope and light. In the stillness of grief, may his love guide us like the gentle unfolding of the lotus, reminding us that transformation, resilience, and beauty endure.
His love for the lotus was no coincidence—it reflects the strength and spirit he carried. And just as the lotus thrives, rooted yet reaching, his presence will always remain within us, quietly uplifting, forever blooming.
