Emily's obituary

Emily Suzanne Crowder

March 31, 1994 - September 30, 2024

Our beloved daughter and sister, Emily Suzanne Crowder, passed away on September 30, 2024 after a years-long battle with mental illness. We are heartbroken and will miss our Em deeply, but we take comfort in the knowledge that she has returned to her Heavenly Parents. We are relieved that Emily’s suffering is over, and we are grateful for our understanding that families are forever. We are comforted by our memories of her love for our family, her protective nature, and her enjoyment of life when her health permitted. Also comforting are the many memories of Emily shared with us since her passing by her extended family and friends.

Emily is the second child of Alisyn and Dave Crowder. She was born in San Francisco, raised in the Bay Area, and graduated from Menlo School in 2013. She graduated from Brigham Young University in 2018 with degrees in Accounting and French and immediately moved to New York City since it had long been her dream to live and work in the Big Apple. She worked at a fintech company and then in the advertising industry for the rest of her career. Emily enjoyed writing and excelled as a copywriter. She enjoyed fine art, having worked as an Art History TA in college, and visited many museums during her time in New York City.

Emily loved to travel and experience new places and cultures. She traveled to a number of countries during her lifetime, including India, where she spent several weeks working with children living in communities for people afflicted with leprosy. She spent parts of her high school and college years studying and working abroad, including in Paris, Morocco and Cambridge. She studied and became fluent in French.

On her 26th birthday, Emily ran a full 26.2-mile marathon on a course she crafted in Atherton and the surrounding towns when the official race she had planned to run was canceled (due to Covid). As a family and with a few friends, we cheered her on and acted as her "aid stations." Watching Emily push herself that day and accomplish her goal was unforgettable. In addition to running, Emily enjoyed hiking, wake surfing, snow skiing, and tennis.

Emily was known for her sharp sense of humor and quick wit. She was intellectually curious and would investigate her areas of interest deeply. She was creative and enjoyed reading and writing poetry. She was always learning a new skill or picking up a new hobby. In recent months, she took acting classes and crafted pottery pieces. Emily often found comfort in music. She loved listening to artists such as Coldplay and Hans Zimmer, and we loved listening to her play the piano, especially her favorite piano piece, Clair de Lune.

Emily is “Auntie Em” to her niece and nephews, who adore her. She spent a good chunk of the most recent Christmas season helping her nephew Clayton build a Lego dinosaur, which he loved. She typically shared a bed with Clayton on family trips and sent him sweet notes and gifts. She FaceTimed with him regularly.

Emily Suzanne is survived by her grandparents Shauna and David Young, Sr., Ken Crowder, and Patricia and Rainer Dahl, parents Alisyn and Dave, brothers Matt (Ashley) and Sam (Mirelle), and sister Eliza (Luke). Emily is also survived by her nephew Clayton and niece Vivian (Matt and Ashley’s children), her nephew Henry (born to Sam and Mirelle four days prior to her passing), and loyal family dog Oakley, whom she was very protective of.
