Emily Chen Carr, 84 who resided on Roosevelt Island, New York passed away on January 1st 2025. She died suddenly in the hospital after a complicated hospital course that included two abdominal surgeries. Emily was born in Panama on December 26th, 1940. Her parents, known to many as "Linto Chen" and "Alicia Siu de Chen" immigrated from Southern China (Zhongshan) to Panama. Growing up in a bilingual high school "el IPA" (Instituto Panamericano) in Panama, Emily excelled as a swimmer and competed in several national tournaments. At the age of 18, a critical inflection point in her life came when she attended a packed stadium known then as a “crusade” by Evangelist Billy Graham and came to accept the Lord as her savior. Emily's faith would be a hallmark of her life and a testimony to many.

While her parents had planned for Emily to have an arranged marriage in Panama, Emily secretly applied to college in the United States, and after being accepted with a full scholarship borrowed money from an uncle to buy a one-way ticket to South Dakota to pursue her education. She graduated from South Dakota Wesleyan University with a bachelor's degree and obtained her Master's Degree from Southern Illinois University both in Bilingual Education.

While working as a secretary she also helped to raise four children as a single mother and after a 30+ year distinguished career at the United Nations, Emily retired and devoted herself to serving in various ministries at Trinity Baptist Church and served as a Spanish translator at voting booths during US Presidential elections. As a Mercy Deacon, she would often visit and pray for sick patients at Coler Hospital. She was also a dedicated member of the prayer team and the Tuesday Night Women's Bible study and participated in The Rwanda Missions trip to build mud brick homes for the less fortunate. An adventurous traveler, she visited countries such as Israel, Jamaica, China, and Cambodia and also enjoyed showing her Artwork at the Roosevelt Island Visual Arts Association (RIVAA) Art gallery.

Anyone who knew Emily knew that she relished at the opportunity to meet new people and make them feel welcome, crack a joke, and was passionate about serving others and sharing her faith as a believer in Christ. She is survived by her five children (Carolyn, Linda, (Earl & Johanna), and Lisa) and three grandchildren, (Jordan, Francis and Mia).

A celebration of life will take place at Trinity Baptist Church located at 250 East 61 Street, on Saturday, January 18th at 2 pm.  As a way to honor Emily, as she was an incredible cook and food connoisseur for those who have the means, you are welcome to make or bring a dish to share during the reception portion after the Memorial Service.
