Em's obituary
Em Marie Carr (they/them), age 28, who also went by “Scout,” died unexpectedly at home on September 7, 2024. They were born on September 27, 1995 and were the proud child of Cécile Smith (Fouqueray) and John Mark Carr (Mark), and the loving sibling of Juliette (Juju) A. and Samuel (Sam) J. Carr.
Em was revered in their many communities as a friend, an activist, and a leader. They were guided in all their actions by a deeply held belief in the importance of helping others and neighborliness -- they showed an unwavering concern, compassion, and commitment to supporting all.
Growing up in Massachusetts, Em was blessed with dear friends that they met through ballet, theater, and summer camp. They found and developed a profound community at Camp Takodah, a YMCA camp in New Hampshire, and spent over 10 formative summers there as a camper, a counselor, and a division head. These summers ignited their love for camping and swimming in rivers and lakes which they did whenever the opportunity arose. They also developed an iconic love for reading and fantasy books early on which they carried forward for life and spent many family vacations in northern Georgia at their grandparent’s mountain house where they rode horses.
After graduating from Oberlin College in 2017, Em began a year-long AmeriCorps position in Sitka, Alaska where they provided career and college counseling to at-risk high schoolers and got their EMT certification. This sparked a career that emulated what it means to be of service to others - shortly after Alaska, Em moved to Seattle and spent several years supporting young parents in need through a local non-profit. This included providing education, free hot meals, housing support, and other resources to help these parents create better lives for themselves and their children. They also became a full spectrum doula, and eventually decided to settle in Asheville, North Carolina where they continued to support important non-profit work as a core team member of The Capacity Collective.
Wherever they went, Em welcomed adventure and was unapologetically themself. Their quick wit and laughter was contagious, and they spent their time where they felt called to be. After settling in Asheville, they began working at the Asheville Survival Program (ASP Streetside) where they found a community that shared similar values and practiced mutual aid & harm reduction efforts that were deeply aligned with their values. Em was prepared to give anything for others and was often selfless in this endeavor. Their life was very much intertwined with Asheville, despite only living there for a few years - but Concord, MA and Santa Fe, NM were also home for Em.
Em spread kindness to others and touched many lives wherever they went, and as a result had a very loving community who will miss this amazing person. A quote hung on their wall perfectly encapsulates Em’s character: “I am deliberate and afraid of nothing.” Besides their loving parents and siblings, Em leaves behind their family by Cécile’s marriage - Kevin, Maya, and Leila - their aunts, uncles, and cousins, their many caring and loving friends, and their two beloved cats.
A celebration of Em’s life will be held at the Concord Scout House (http://concordscouthouse.org) on Sunday, October 6, at 3:30pm. All are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions may be made in Em Carr’s name to The Abortion Care Network, an organization whose mission embodies Em’s values and that they most recently asked family to donate to.
