Elwood's obituary
Elwood Walter Thompson, 70, passed away January 23, 2022. Elwood was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, to Elwood John Thompson and Gladys (Remphrey) Thompson on June 4, 1951, the eldest of six children. His is survived by his wife, Deborah (Deb), his son Corey (Amy), mother Gladys, his sisters, Linda (Bob) Mikolaicik, Helen (Florian) Costello and Debbie Daniel, his brother Thomas (Liz) Thompson, his uncle Walter Remphrey, brother-in-law Russ Woodburn (Linda Hines) and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his father Elwood John, and his brother George.
Elwood trained as an Electrical Engineer and started working at Ford Aerospace right out of college. He was a lifelong car buff and fan of all things Ford.
Elwood was an ardent patriot and loved everything military. He was a Department of Defense contractor with the Air Force, living in Britain for a number of years and traveling the world. He eventually settled in the Richmond, Virginia area, where he was living when he passed. Elwood was a Chief Warrant Officer Retired in the Virginia Defense Force, serving as Communications Officer, Safety Officer and in the Riverine unit, and volunteered for the American Red Cross.
He loved people, and was blessed in having many life-long friends. He was passionate about airplanes, trains, ships, model trains, and anything Christmas, playing Santa for the children and adults of our church and his friends and family. He was an excellent marksman, ardent supporter of the NRA and enjoyed spending time at the shooting range. His greatest gift and joy was making others laugh and laughing with them, always having jokes ready for any occasion.
He was loved and he is missed.
Elwood's Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, April 23rd, 2:00pm, at Unity of Bon Air, 923 Buford Road, Richmond, VA 23235.
